Sturgill and Isbell really have very little in common outside of being "country" and getting good reviews.

None of those three really sound that similar, beyond often sharing a producer.

i may get better but we won't ever get well Prestigious

when i still listened to the genre, they were one of the bands of that sort of type (counter-culture mainstream, angsty teen goth "emo" pop punk whatever) that i never really liked despite being a big fan of all the others that did that thing. weird. idk maybe it was some subconscious desire to be counter culture to the counter culture or something.

the Arctic Monkeys mostly suck and Kings of Leon have a really solid discography*.

You said "artists like" so even if you didn't say they sounded the same, it's a pretty understandable interpretation

I like Isbell and Stapleton but Simpson bores me

it's pretty obvious they are in the same generation/scene (i realize country doesn't really use that term but whatever) of musicians

them having the same producer is a pretty big indicator that it's justifiable to lump them together

LL Cool J, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, Metallica and Coheed are all justifiable to lump together by that logic.

Rick Rubin is pretty unique in his range. Definite exception. It is not abnormal for producers to work in the same scene at all. Look at will yip

I'd say Dave Cobb is one of the more versatile producers working right now, owing largely to how prolific he is. You can't really lump together Stapleton, Lake Street Dive, and Europe, which are just three of the many, many artists he's worked with lately.

That said, Stapleton, Isbell, and Sturgill definitely do get lumped together for playing similar roles in helping drive country and Americana back to their roots (and getting recognition/awards for it). It just seemed like the original comment indicated that Phaynes dislikes them all for the same reason, which was kind of a head-scratcher because the actual music they make doesn't sound that similar.

I'm actually with you on this to an extent. I like them enough for what they are and how they do actual country music, but at the same time (outside of a few outstanding songs) I don't reach for them nor do they occupy any sort of "favorites" position for me.

I agree with this. I adore Home and haven't listened to Goodness since the week it came out. Perhaps I should try again

Goodness is more of a grower. It took me (and still is taking me) time to really appreciate it, whereas as soon as I heard the opening notes to the first song on Home I knew I was about to listen to something special.

Both were growers for me, but since I already loved the band by the time goodness came out that one grew quicker
