You are correct, but in mattys defense (ugh) there are people who have done way more heinous shit than he has. It doesnt excuse mattys assery nor does it excuse the ppl who defend him just bc 1975 is chorus' #1 favee.

oh absolutely I'm not saying he's on par with rapists or sexual predators. Just that when you scroll through this thread, the folks that fall into the category of "toxic" as opposed to actual criminal acts are (rightly) held to account for their words while people minimize Matty's actions and say "everyone is just waiting for him to say something controversial and then pile on"

 

Who is defending him though? I love The 1975 and I can fully admit he’s an idiot and it makes it harder to like the band. It isn’t criminal though, and I think it’s completely reasonable for me to care less when he’s being an idiot online for attention over the vile shit that comes around here like the Jesse Lacey’s of the world.

yeah, that's what i was originally referring to. i muted the thread because the defense of his nonsense is ridiculous.

 

I think we can acknowledge there are problematic artists with active threads on here that we kind of excuse because we like their music, from Blink to John Mayer to LANY to Nicki Minaj. It’s exhausting trying to keep up with everything and we all have different tipping point for when it’s just time to stop listening. As a 1975 fan, I just don’t understand any defense of Matty any more. He needs his Internet access revoked.

To the other point - We still talk about bands like Brand New and All Time Low in mostly negative ways, but I don’t think anyone has said you can’t say their names.

 

LANY has been a hard one. It was disappointing as hell that their vocalist was revealed to be a fuck boy who would manipulate his relationships into him always being the victim. I did stop listening for a few months but due to it not being a case where he was singularly abusing his platform to find girls to take advantage of, I was able to still tolerate the music.

Probably just my bias and excuse because LANY was a band I listened to regularly during a very transitional period in my life. I acknowledge that it’s probably bias on my end and understand why someone wouldn’t listen to their music or support them on tour. I’d also be fine if the LANY thread was locked due to others not being comfortable with it.

But, like you said, we have our tipping points. If he was being a shitty boyfriend to impressionable girls who were his fans then that would be a tipping point.

Don’t know why I made this comment, either. Maybe I’m wanting to see if others struggle with this towards other groups.

I think they might be referring to bands who got their forums removed upon allegations such as Brand New and Pinegrove. But I think it more so had to do with the arguing and toxicity within those threads. I don’t know. That’s all.

 

Those artists did not do "way less" than Matty though lol. I agree with the sentiment that people should not defend Matty for stuff like this, I just still see people reference JL or Kanye on here all the time, almost exclusively in a negative light
