There was one kid at my Catholic high school who would not just refuse to participate in "Dress Down" days, but actively tried to get the school to do away with them. Glad to know he could one day be a successful United States Senator.

Jokes aside, kids are assholes and would make fun of anyone who had shabby, non-name brand clothes, so maybe he had a point.

Today brought me the luls of Eve 6 guy remembering the music venue of my youth and then finding out it was closing in the same thread. Place was a shithole but had some amazing shows in its heyday. Matchbook Romance & Autopilot Off got their starts there. Saw My Chem opening for Hopesfall on their first tour.

Fun The Chance lore: the third date of The Police’s first US tour (even before Roxanne was released to radio) was at The Chance in the middle of an ice storm. Supposedly three people and some music executives showed and The Police were PISSED lol.

    Fantastic article.

For modern Chinese leaders, history is the key to their legitimacy: History chose the Communist Party to save China; history has determined that it has succeeded; and history blesses its continued hold on power. This history is of course written by the party, which employs armies of scribes, filmmakers, videographers and journalists to push its version of events, both recent and ancient. Through them, the party controls textbooks, movies, television documentaries, popular history magazines, even video games.

The result is a population that is often unaware of the recent past. The Great Famine of 1959-61 is still known euphemistically as “three difficult years” caused mainly by natural disasters. Discussion of the Cultural Revolution of 1966-76, a time when state-led violence claimed as many as two million lives, shuttered schools and sent educated people to work as laborers, is increasingly taboo. The erasure goes beyond events of last century. Even the Covid crisis has been scrubbed, with whistle-blowers turned into pro-government heroes and the harsh lockdowns now off limits in public discussion.

In theory, could the dems find five Republicans and go “none of us want a shutdown so let’s get a budget that will be favorable enough for you lot that you’re better off taking it” and get something passed? Or are there procedural rules that make that impossible even beyond the issue of finding five+ reasonable republicans?
