I want to nitpick something in this tweet (not the words you posted)

throwing to a slant before the WR actually breaks open is the most basic, rudimentary form of anticipation. So let’s not get TOO ahead with the “A+” comment haha. That was A+ timing, not anticipation. This is a madden-level understanding of football.

anticipation is like, reading a key based on the difference between the pre-snap look and what happens first 0.3 seconds of the snap… and then *already knowing* which route is gonna be open based off that, so you can spend the next 1.5-2 seconds doing something to mislead the defense. To do it consistently, a QB has to memorize all of the “tells” a defense can give you - including the tricky ones where they line up in one look but do something different after the snap - and you have to have your playbook so memorized that you know what the strategic goal of every route is in every play.

It’s like that Justin Fields play. A good QB sees how a CB reacts to a quick out, and based on that split second, he already knows whether to throw deep to the seam or whether to just take the easy yards. The bar for a good QB is that high - A+ anticipation is when, you already decided where you’re going with the ball, based on experience seeing patterns and knowing what specific patterns mean in each situation, so you can be mentally ahead of the defense not just trying to beat them with timing and a hard throw.

throwing a slant between two zone coverage is basic and is usually supposed to be like, your secondary option, if the defense came out in a look that is unfavorable for your primary goal. I say this because young QBs can throw UGLY INTs by falling in love with slants too much - no matter how early you throw it, someone is gonna bait you and pick it off if you rely on that too much on third down. If you make it hard for a LB to know a slant is coming that’s one thing, but if he knows this QB leans on that play a LOT when it’s 2nd and 7 or whenever he gets blitzed… it’s not that hard to fake inside and then ad lib outside to take that passing lane away and hope you get lucky and catch him doing it.

Yeah it's hard for me to criticize Bryce when the idiots they have running that offense refuse to give Sanders the ball. Anyway. No ulterior motive behind that statement. I'm fine.

 

it’s not like sanders is that good though. seeing him and chuba getting carries when we had probably the best RB in the league and seeing thielen be the top receiver when we had DJ Moore just sucks. the team is going to be feeling the poor decision making after scrambling to make up for two terrible QB decisions for a long time.
