1) the Vikings gave up 5 players and both its first AND second round picks THREE YEARS IN A ROW (1990, 1991, 1992) in a package for Herschel Walker

Walker proceeded to have only two seasons of roughly 1000 total yards (rushing and receiving) and 10 total TDs - very average rushing numbers in a league that focused on RBs back then. Both seasons the Vikings missed the playoffs, and Herschel was off the team before the Vikings were even done giving up draft picks for him (1992).

2) the Saints traded *every single pick they had in the 1999 draft* PLUS a first round and third round pick in the 2000 draft, just to move up SEVEN SPOTS to trade up for Ricky Williams. Williams did more damage for them than Walker did for the Vikings, but they only made the playoffs one of those 3 years.

that first season they went 3-13, and Williams was famously unpassionate about football and already beginning to alienate teammates. This of course got Mike Ditka fired as head coach. What makes this one especially bad:
-Washington used some of that ammo to draft Champ Bailey, one of the best CBs of all time
-3 years later the Saints already replaced Williams with Deuce McAllister who ended up being a more famous RB for the Saints, and traded Ricky to Miami before his rookie deal was up, failing to even benefit from Ricky’s prime / best years.
-the league had just moved to the smaller 7 round draft, so the Saints had to sign 25(!) free agents to fill the roster after giving up this many picks

3) Washington traded 3 firsts and a second to draft RG3. That might have been a good trade if he stayed healthy but the fact that he didn’t absolutely tanked the team, they were not that good of a roster. Even that is worse than the Lance trade cause at least SF was able to manufacture decent QB play and make it deep into the playoffs anyway

the Lance trade was horrible value but @CarpetElf is right that it’s not the worst trade of all time and it didn’t hurt SF like the worst trades of all time hurt their teams.

 

Cannot believe we have to make comparisons to illustrate how the trade up for Lance wasn’t as horrible as other horrible decisions made through NFL history
