Just learned that my boss that I hate is retiring. I had a feeling it was coming soonish cause he's old af but I just didn't know when. He's one of the biggest reasons why I've been (unsuccessfully) looking for a new job. He's not leaving until mid-October at the earliest so I'm not sure what I should do now lol

That is one option yes. I'm also not sure if the people above him view me as his replacement? Or if I even want the job? Obviously I would need a big raise for me to consider it, but it would be more management and less technical and I don't know if I want that
