The Story So Far - Proper Dose (September 21st, 2018) Album • Page 58

  1. What makes them boring live? Genuinely curious. I really just like watching them play their instruments, and I could give a shit about Parker as long as he sounds good. The spinning shit bands like Neck Deep pull on stage is so corny to me.

I think it has been since Parker started his whole Liam Gallagher phase.

i don't think it's hard to understand? a lively band that looks like they're having fun is usually more fun to watch than the opposite.

yeah this isn't shoegaze so i expect a little more than just staring at your feet on stage

They’ve been this way for 12 years, nothing surprising at this point.

Can someone TL:DR the Pura falling out? I'm listening to Same Side, the side project of guitarist Keven and read it was produced by Pura in 2021? Is it all of TSSF, or some that beef with him?

Abusive is the wrong word. Impatient and completely un-empathetic is the right description. The negative experiences with me stem from musicians being unprepared and unwilling to allow me to help them reach their desired end result within the time we have with the tools and talent we have available for us. Saying things to me like “just press record” or “I’m the client you do what I say” are vibes that will get you an extremely emotional reaction out of me. 99% of my clients don’t have this experience with me.

The only way to have acted towards people who had a negative experience with me to have avoided any conflict would be 1. to simply say to them “I don’t care about my job and my career, I don’t care about your record and your career, I just want you to feel comfortable and happy” unfortunately that’s not how and why I do what I do. But good news is there are thousands of others who do. And or 2. Quit the record. I wish I would have quit more records. But I care too much and stick with it because I care about the people and their music and am completely unconcerned with the challenges presented along the way. Even if that’s being combative with some musicians.

I’ll copy and paste a comment I left on Reddit previously. Hopefully that gives you more insight.

I was disappointed in the Self Titled process. I had a very narrow window to make that record. Parker didn’t show up to record vocals during that period. My 2 weeks I had set aside to mix the album became the only remaining time available to record Parker’s vocals. Therefore the album technically “never had a mixing session” and the day after the masters were delivered Nerve was posted online. I’m not disappointed with the quality of the end result, but I was very disappointed with their actions and the label and management’s hard deadlines with absolutely no oversight of ensuring they were adequately prepared to work and show up within the time we had scheduled. I’m mainly disappointed that I wasn’t given the opportunity to nail the albums full potential.

Therefore with Proper Dose I wasn’t going to let anything slide or cut any corners. I didn’t care about anything other than achieving my full and complete satisfaction with the end result. And each step of the way that I was met with a demand to cut a corner, I would instead be combative and therefore “undesirable” to work with because instead of “doing what I was told” I was instead being their producer and best friend fighting for the integrity of THEIR album and the longevity of THEIR future.

You can see a theme here. The problem is I care. A LOT. However that’s also my greatest skill. Either that’s a feature of me you appreciate and want to work with, or you want someone else who will just do what you want with no resistance.

    TL:DR I’m a producer not a service provider

  12. I totally respect your passion for your career and helping your friends reach their goals and potential. Proper Dose is still the only TSSF I come back to, and a lot of that is because you can hear/feel that the entire thing is a fully realized passion project. You and the guys nailed it front to back. It's really disheartening that you weren't given the opportunity to help them with a follow up to it. I can't even imagine how amazing that would have probably turned out. Anyway, keep doin what you're doin, Sam!

The other point worth making is that after my falling out with TSSF, I started a second business, I now have 2 children, I have a full time assistant engineer, and Panda has literally never been busier. The point is, when I walked away from what people perceived as “my biggest project” my creative, spiritual / mental, and financial success exponentially increased. How ironic right? When I worked with TSSF, I had the most drama in my life, the least amount of money ever, and was being creatively stifled each step of the way.

This was a little confusing to fully absorb and understand during this development process. However… now that Kelen is on the other side… I’ve gotten all the validation I needed to know and that truth is that “the problem is them, not us”

Also it’s worth stating I seriously couldn’t give a fuck what TSSF does. I feel nothing about them anymore and I’m thankful for that. Best of luck to them. I have absolutely no interest in them other than answering peoples questions that involve me.

You know.....I've been heavily listening to this album recently and I gotta say.....Its probably one of my all favorite albums and saying that shocks the hell out of me given all of my other "all time favorite" albums are at least decade old.

As @cosmickid said months ago....I will also be BLOWN away if they somehow top this album. I think the next one will be really good.....but there will always be something special about the first album a band changes their direction/sound.

Proper Dose was just so intentional. I know Sam Pura (the man) had a lot to do with that, so......damn haha. Just.....damn.
