one thing i'm reminded of seeing how much play Reece James and Sterling got going down the side is how good Sadio Mane's defensive work rate was

with Gakpo and Luis Diaz as Robertson's support on that side, wasn't too surprising to see how much room Chelsea had to maneuver

with a proper DM allowing Mac Allister to move up into a more natural position (and then Gakpo being planted firmly up top), I think Mac Allister would have provided better cover (perhaps Mac Allister and Szoboszlai swap sides in the ideal version of the squad, idk)

but I'm not sure Diaz has the engine Mane had for defensive support

    Wow. This is awesome.

He looked brilliant in the Arsenal youth team, but never broke through and had a raft of hugely underwhelming loans. Went away to Greece, where he finally clicked, and since coming back to England it has really worked out for him.

Some players find it easy, but others can spend a decade finding their footing. Hope he does well.

  7. Bad idea, right?

Another one off the Hale End production line, crushing it already on their loan this season.

Already made an error leading to a goal lol. Hoping he learns from it because he absolutely deserves a shot at the highest level.

Lewy has been punched or elbowed three times in 15 minutes with no recourse yet. Pretty wild to see La Liga picking right back up with reffing this bad.

Up to four now on Lewy, and a blatant elbow to Gundogan off the ball as well.

Raphinha got a deserved red for doing exactly what they’ve gotten away with five times. Just be consistent ffs

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

  16. The fouls and the ref in this game make me feel like I’m watching MLS.

Never thought I’d be out here missing Mateu Lahoz, but he’d at least have control of this 7v7 game

Is there any research about the effect on the attacking team of a goal being called off for offside after review? Whether it potentially deflates them (disappointment), rejuvenates them (nearly got one so let’s get more) or no impact whatsoever

I always wonder what goes through the players’ heads when they have this whole big celebration only to have it called off a minute later

  19. Reflecting back on the game a little more…

Bissouma and Maddison look really good. I know he had an injury at some point last year, but I have no idea why Bissouma was so underutilized last year. And Maddison is just the exact player we’ve been needing ever since Eriksen left. Assisted both goals today, including a perfect set piece cross. Once Bentancur is healthy, they’re going to be a very, very good trio. The depth behind them is pretty solid as well.

It’s interesting that we’re being heavy linked to Eze. As said above, we have solid depth in the midfield. But I guess it doesn’t mean we can’t continue to upgrade. Eze can play CAM or out-wide so I think he’d be a fantastic piece to add.

I thought the defense was overall fine considering the circumstances. Udogie’s debut. VDV’s debut 5 days after we bought him. Romero leaving injured very early. New GK. New manager. It’s going to take time and improved depth for everything to click. But I do like the 4 we started today. Emerson is actually kind of a perfect fit for Ange ball.

My biggest concern was the front 3. Richy wasn’t really involved at all. Son and Kulu struggled to create chances. My optimistic take is that it’s just going to take time in the new system. They’re all clearly talented. You’d think they’d start to gel eventually?

United is going to be a huge test.
