I haven’t played a lot of horror but for me personally vibe and sound and maybe gameplay are more impactful than graphics

As a horror stan it’s all about setting up the atmosphere and making the player or viewer feel what the game is trying to convey and the only game to do that FOR ME is Alien: Isolation. Dead Space comes close but I’ve literally played them so much I can’t remember what it’s like the first time.

Although, Dead Space remake is a great example of how to make me feel close to the first time I played it and that is pretty damn cool.

Gameplay is always more impactful in regards to how good the game is. But how scary the game is? I think graphics have such a weirdly huge role in that genre.

I think the clunkyness definitely made like old RE games scarier in a way

Maybe but I also think that's a bit artificial. Jank makes every game more stressful no matter the genre.

Idk the original Yume Nikki has real simple graphics but the existential dread is super strong

Or like that ghost town in the first pokemon games lol that vibe still gives me anxiety

There is a reason these games are being remastered or remade. I can only imagine Alien: Isolation remade. I would need to play on the toilet.

Because it’s cheaper and most gamers have never played them or haven’t played them in many years so you can sell them again easily

Also because hooking up old consoles to HD TVs sucks balls, which really is a great reason

Any reason? All their horror games on Steam are either Mostly Positive or Very Positive. I've watched playthroughs of the Layers Of Fear games and it feels like they've got a fair grasp on psychological horror, although I don't know if any of their games involve combat.

because they’re fucking morons who shouldn’t be trusted with a story deeper than a puddle. Also most of their games rely heavily on jump scares to create tension. And their art for SH is frankly dogshit imo.

“My grievance, though, is more in the vein of the tinge of exploitation – that Bloober doesn't really seem to depict the complexity or humanity of these issues an inch beyond what takes to justify the development of the video game they wanted to make. This, despite consistently reaching right for biggest, edgiest toys – shellshock, child rape, holocaust – while seemingly conflating “serious, dark stories” with “no positive outcomes” and seemingly taking cues about mental health from Hollywood stereotypes instead of diagnostic manuals. I don't think it's what they mean to do, but I think the optics of certain scenes are unnecessarily and avoidably bad.

They did a lot right, but IMHO, some of it was clumsy, too. I loved these games for what they were, but again IMHO, when it came time to explore Richard and Lily, the point seemed to be disproportionately "cool monster, edgy story" over "compelling exploration of difficult subject matter in a memorable narrative."

Therefore, when I hear they might be taking on Silent Hill – a franchise where what it means to have and deal with inner darkness is front and center in the narrative – the entire point of the game – I do get a bit nervous. (Not that Silent Hill always stuck that landing, either, mind you.)”

It sounds like that person's main criticism is in their writing, which having an already written narrative should help with, no? I'm choosing to stay positive about it.

You’re 100% right of course. I guess if I’m being honest I just don’t feel like they deserve to make it, you know?

And I do really dislike the art fwiw

I found Alien: Isolation more frustrating than scary unfortunately.

Love the world and atmosphere tho

Yeah, I get it. Who would you want to have made it? Frictional comes to mind.
