The opening of this is so wonderful

 

fuckkkkk the rocket breakout scene is brutal and an incredible piece of subversion AND a huge character moment. Great stuff. Rocket, Teef, … go now x10 just hurt

Might be my favorite MCU movie, or tied with Ragnarok at the very least

Pretty sure this is the first MCU film I've watched twice in a week. And I did that in three days lol

 

I may be an MCU skeptic, but as a James Gunn and Guardians respecter, it brings me no pleasure to report that I did not like this

 

It brings none of us pleasure. Today is a sad and dark day, full of mourning.

It was mostly the third act for me that dragged into more typical MCU fare, I found the movie overall to be equal parts fun and overstuffed, visually interesting and video game cut scene. People aren't going to like this because I don't read comics and haven't kept up with the MCU so I may have missed things, but the random telekinesis dog and Chris Pratt's face depressurizing in space were both unintentionally funny to me. The Mowgli's needle drop was bad. I also don't understand why Rocket is okay with killing dozens (if not hundreds) of nameless foot soldiers, but not the man who single-handedly tortured and murdered his friends.

Some of these are small nitpicks, and I have a few that are bigger, but I say this all with respect to the fact that the first two Guardians films are easily two of my favorite to come out of the MCU, so while this is objectively better than something like Quantumania, my standards were also much lower for that film. I don't think this was bad as a whole; I just didn't mesh with it, unfortunately.

 

Cosmo is a good dog. And from the comics, for information's sake.

 

The depressurizing of Pratts face was intentionally hysterical too!!

About Rocket, I don't think the point was that he wasn't okay with killing the High Evolutionary. I think it was more that it was no longer important to him whether he lived or died. It's a reflection of growth of his character that he's not letting his anger or his mistreatment define him. I mean, they left the High Evolutionary to die, so it's not like they cared if he survived.

It's crazy how much better the CGI was in this movie vs every other Marvel movie lately. Rocket's fur simulation looked so real

Either Marvel gave Gunn more money than other directors, or he's just way better at pre-planning and doesn't require a lot of last minute changes

 

Just confirming they did not leave him to die. They captured him. Drax is carrying him during the escape.
