It's not really that complicated at all.

You offer someone a 3 year contract with a salary of 1 mil and 500k bonus then you just offered him a total contact of 4.5 mil with 1.5 guaranteed. Contracts are structured where they increase yearly in the game so your cap hit for the next season that it tells you on the screen is likely less than 1.5 mil.

If you cut someone that's an upcoming free agent then you're not going to get any cap savings because he's not being counted against your cap. I cut a handful of guys and had no issues. R.I.P. Sammy B.

He was virtually non existent for me until I tried to trade him. It's almost like he knew, because after that he almost averaged 2 sacks a game. He even forced a sack fumble that resulted in points in the super bowl.

I say all that to say that your offer better be pretty large.
