So the Broken Glowsticks EP was released today. But it seems it's only 3 songs? 10 min long? That's disappointing. They should have at least put all the songs on it released so far right?

    this is all there is

I've barely listened to BG, but it really just sounds like the songs could easily have been TDS songs, they're not a rapid departure for him, songwriting-wise. Has AJ ever talked about that? A quick Google doesn't find any interviews or articles.

BG is lowkey the best stuff he's written in years. Sleeping Through a Car Crash would have been the best track on Coming Home

Kinda bummed that this EP is just one new song and 2 that were already released.
But all 3 are fantastic. Agreed that these 3 songs plus Sleeping Through a Car Crash are the best songs he’s released since Mother Nature

Liked these songs and hope the next TDS album is more this than Coming Home

I think the song Coming Home is super underrated. Not top tier but would have fit nicely on Mother Nature.

Not excusing the decision to tour with Emarosa at all but I can see how AJ would not have made that connection from this particular comment. It scans more like a general snarky comment on face value.
And also this is the first time I've learned about the Emarosa stuff, and I've been on this site for over 15 years. I try to keep up even as life has gotten crazy busy. I would have no clue if it wasn't for this thread. A band touring with Emarosa has the responsibility to do its due diligence and hopefully then make the call not to associate. So TDS are in the wrong regardless. But it is feasible that they had no idea about the situation and possibly still don't.

I think I remember reading about the accusations here when it happened but this thread made me dig a little deeper and apparently they were dropped by Hopeless and their management when it happened. It might be possible TDS don’t know - it kind of seems to have been swept under the rug.

The title track was great and def could've fit on there. Wish the rest of Coming Home did anything for me

  10. He went so far as to change his name to hide from it. He’s a real piece of work. The Emarosa thread has a lot more details.

is this a joke or do you think people drinking and doing drugs and then writing songs about their lived experiences equals glorification?

I understand your point but they do “glorify” it in their lyrics and they are definitely big time partiers based on social media.

“I wanna drink the lights out of this bar
And watch the sun come out in Nashville
Take a bump, then drive your car”

To me, it’s often enough and specific enough to hard drugs that I just can’t relate to it and it turns me off. I’d probably have an easier time ignoring it if I felt that their music was as strong as it used to be.

Updates from AJ via livestream today:

-The deluxe version of Coming Home will release on August 25th (1 Year anniversary) to close out the Coming Home chapter. This will include 2 reimagined versions of album tracks with guest features. One guest spot is confirmed to be Max Bemis.

*Max was not confirmed on the livestream today, this was confirmed during the June 2022 chorus.fm interview here: https://chorus.fm/features/interviews/the-dangerous-summer/

-The first single for their next album Gravity will release shortly after Coming Home Deluxe via Rude Records.

-The band reached out to Sam Pura to record the Mother Nature follow up, but he insisted they keep writing. Since they were in write and record mode they pressed on without him, but there is no bad blood.

-Coming Home and the upcoming Gravity album were recorded locally at the Bakery in Virginia with Will Beasley.

-The band is now managed by Ron Laffitte who manages The Backstreet Boys (ha) & Chris Cornell's estate. To increase their popularity they are debating doing more support touring slots instead of headlining tours, difficult call...

    - The intention is to tour the UK (and possibly greater Europe?) in early 2024.

-Christian will be playing drums on the recently announced tour dates. He played on Coming Home and also Gravity.

-AJ is a huge Weatherbox fan and confirmed his side project Broken Glowsticks is named after the Weatherbox track. I believe he even said that A Space To Grow was his attempt at a Weatherbox song which is awesome.

-The Ditches project was created during the pandemic era and the 2 songs released are all the project is at the moment.

-If AJ had to pick one out of the first 3 albums to do a "Taylor's Version" style re-recording he would pick their debut.

-Favorite song to perform live is Way Down.

-Not news but reiterated his love for Tom DeLonge, blink-182, Angels & Airwaves & Box Car Racer. Box Car Racer is consistently mentioned while they record as an influence.

Lol having a feature with Max is par for the course along with touring with Emarosa. Disappointing decisions made by the band recently. I’m all for opening for tours but that Emarosa tour is going to do very little for them and it’s gross that Emarosa is still an active band.

I obviously appreciate the band’s desire to make a bunch of music and put it out there, but Sam’s tip to keep writing is such simple but valuable advice that any artist should heed. Not every song you write is a winner and taking time to write a lot of songs for an album can help shape something truly great. Feels like their decision not to heed that advice is pretty much the difference between the quality of Mother Nature and the quality of Coming Home.

Anyway, I hope I like the next album better!

I get the need for a turn and burn release schedule if you’re a small band like this and music is how you make your living, but obviously the art suffers if you become an assembly line when it comes to outputting music. I mean max bemis did the same thing and his music fell off a cliff with too much song shop stuff, side projects, paid features so it’s ironic he’s been brought up lol

I sincerely hope the next record is better than coming home but if they continue to work with Will Beasly unfortunately it’s unlikely to see Mother Nature quality again.

First and foremost let me state the obvious, Mother Nature is a tremendous achievement and the bands magnum opus. It proved what this band was capable of when they put the time / effort in and had a producer that would push them when they needed it. It's also not wrong to hold up our favorite bands to the standards of their best art...

BUT I do think everyone is being harsh on the band in terms of the 2 releases that followed, All That Is Left Of The Blue Sky & Coming Home. Are they more inconsistent & half cooked compared to Mother Nature? Yes, absolutely. Are they trash? absolutely not. There are quality songs on both releases, particularly on Coming Home. Every band has a catalogue, and there are major releases and minor releases. When the times right we can hope that a proper Mother Nature follow up will occur. I just feel like we are holding them to a higher standard to many of their peers who have been around this long. It's just the nature of how things go...

Sometimes artists shake up the process or flow for different periods of their career and learn some rights and wrongs through trial and error. Hopefully we are pleasantly surprised with Gravity and if not, maybe it will lead to music that will be truly inspired.

Last album was so obviously undercooked... definitely need to take more time on writing the next album.

  23. The Maine just released the five strongest albums of their career in the last 8 years. So, I don't think I'm holding them to a higher standard than their peers. I just wish the last album was better and think it would have been if they took their time writing it and had an outside hand pushing back on the obvious parts that needed pushing back on (and I'm worried upcoming one will suffer from the same issues, if they're doing the same thing they did there).

this is a fair take Jason. I get the frustrating thing is, Coming Home has the feel of something that could have been great but ended up feeling less than. As stated above by many people here, I agree it needed to be flushed out more and refined. But I just don't get the sense they are taking the same nose dive that Max / Say Anything did.

I mean, once you admitted they were inconsistent and half cooked, you should have stopped. That’s what people are wanting them to do better on. Do you not want that? I don’t see how that’s such a high standard.
