That's the only part of the band's statement that gave me pause "In 30 years we've never witnessed..."

There are plenty of unfortunate examples where victims aren't believed because of the excuse - "well I never saw them act this way, so it must not be true".

But I could also see it as the band saying they are just as shocked and ashamed, because they never expected this type of behavior from someone they are that close with.

 

Yeah, I read that bit as them saying they never saw this coming because they've never witnessed him act inappropriate.

 

Yeah that’s how I read it. I assumed they were shocked because they would not expect someone like Justin to do something like that

 

"A core tenet of the band Anti-Flag is to listen to and believe all survivors of sexual violence and abuse. The recent allegations about Justin are in direct contradiction to that tenet" is saying they don't want to believe this allegation, unless I'm misunderstanding that and they're saying Justin alone is the one contradicting? I just think it's a weird phrasing, and ending the band because they know how much shit they would get if they continued doesn't 100% absolve them if they're potentially insinuating "Yea we don't believe this because we've known Justin for 30 years and he's a great guy, but we know we can't continue in any way that looks good."

If their hearts are truly in the right place then that would be great, I just think the statement could have been worded better if that's the case.

 

People in here were like, "Hopefully the band didn't know this was going on". Then, are angry when the band basically says, "We didn't know this was going on".

Anyone else grappling with having to discard decades worth of music you loved from these guys? I can't listen to them anymore...

Edit: to be clear, I have no second thoughts about walking away from their music, at all. It's just a lot to suddenly discard.

 

Nope, I had no issue with completely walking away from them. There are so many bands and artists out there, regardless how they have impacted my life thus far, as soon as I hear they're absolute monsters, I'm done.

they were a big part of my upbringing. i'm realizing i have a ton of A-F merch to shun from my collection now. i took a minute to process that but really at this point i have no problem shutting them out of my life.

I don’t own any merch or physical copies of their music, but if I did, I’d most likely be throwing them away. I removed all of their albums from my streaming library. Just can’t do it anymore. Monstrous shit.

Damn, imagine taking issue with a band's statement huh.

In any case, what an awful read geez. Really really sucks to hear what they went through.

Oh I fully acknowledge that. Just didn't care for being passive-aggressively told off for not completely agreeing with a band's statement in a situation like this.

But this obviously is not the main focus of this by any measure and I'm just continuing it on, so I'll stop. Just a really shitty situation and line of events, and for that many years. Glad Rolling Stone got more of the story out even if it's stuck behind a paywall for general people.

 

I can’t speak to if the other members truly had no idea or not but if they didn’t I think that’s a good statement.
