I think it’s probably a little of both, of being planned and also being made up of newer ideas formed from elements of the old show. Lynch is notorious for editing the script last minute during filming too.

Been a minute since I read the Mark Frost books, but I don't think they need to be read in any specific order from what I remember. That said, I'd hold off on reading either of them until you finish The Return.

Dang okay so we finished The Missing Pieces and are now 3 episodes into The Return. Wowza what the flip is happening

Would love to see a cut of FWWM with all of the missing stuff stitched in. The Bowie stuff kinda needed to be there?

Yup, definitely think the Missing Pieces are essential

I still can't believe he cut the scene with Donna's parents with the dialogue about angels, literally ties the themes of the movie together and it's probably the most beautiful scene in his work ever

are we sure it was Lynch/Frost who cut the scene or maybe the scene was demanded to be cut due to time restrictions? either way, it's kinda dope they canonized all that material in The Return

when I first watched FWWM, it was a fan-edited "uncut" version that included the Missing Pieces. made for a long viewing experience but well worth it

Not having any context, I kind of assumed (hoped) it was the studios who cut all of this out. I can't imagine Lynch or Frost wanting some of the stuff in The Missing Pieces not included

    especially the Bowie ass-monkey scene

The TWOOOO BYYY FOUUUURR scene alone from Missing Pieces justifies editing it all back in

The Return is wild. We're about halfway through but it's certainly not easy to binge. Trying to keep up with all the characters and arcs, but some episodes are kinda brutal with Dougie. What patience and discipline Kyle Maclachan had to have sheesh.

It’s an easier rewatch on the second time, I guess because you know to appreciate the extended time with Dougie instead of wanting something else. The wait is worth it though.

First time I watched this I enjoyed it. The second time i watched it felt (after rewatching the original series and FWWM) religious.

I don't think I've ever experienced anything quite like it, especially after rewatching the original run and movie right before we moved into The Return, but the curiosity surrounding the plot at large and how everything connects and ties together is at all all time high. There's just so much layering and complexity to it all and it makes me think that Lynch is operating on a creative level that many do not even really ever get to see.

I stand by that watching The Return live for the first time on a weekly basis was one of my favorite television experiences ever. It just totally mystified my world for the entire length of the season.

that was the single greatest television experience I've had. still remember exactly when and where I was when I hit play on episode 1 and got goosebumps up my arms at The Fireman

The Return running at the same time as The Leftovers season 3 is a level of quality television i don’t think I’ll ever experience again. Factor in Fargo Season 3 (which i think is underrated) and damn what a time.

Yep. The birth of Bob from the Experiment, Fireman being aware of it from the alarm and summoning Laura’s orb in an effort to defeat it. I love it.
