You can not listen to a band for any reason no matter how silly, for instance my not listening to Perfect Pussy because that name makes me want to clutch pearls

I definitely did not listen to Brand New for a long time because of how I was approached about them haha

like i get it mars hill was shady and discroll is a sketchy dude but he was given an opportunity and he saw it as a way to practice and further his faith and had nothing else going on since thrice was on hiatus but i remember reading after he left he said something along the lines of he learned a lot about himself and his faith during that whole ordeal and it turned out to not be what he thought it would be. joining may have been a mistake but i always believe dustin's heart is in the right place, he's an extremely compassionate person.

It seems like it just solely on what was said, with no context/explanation (as of yet).

Yeah, that's why I posted "Whistleblower", it's about that exact topic and Dustin's apparent involvement in getting Driscoll removed from the church (which ultimately led to its dissolution).

I do agree with all that and I'm glad that it's something he's severed ties from

I guess my big point is, if you're a non-listener, have no reason to delve into Thrice, and what you hear about him is his affiliation with Mars Hill Church (and because you're a non-listener you really have no reason to read into it further), isn't it understandable that you wouldn't want to try and listen if that conflicted with your views? And wouldn't you not really want to bother fact-checking something the interest wasn't there for in the first place when that's the first thing you hear?

dustin was in a leadership role at the church while they wouldnt allow gay members and they were aggressively homophobic for years before he left

Given that white, American evangelical Christianity is tied to so much oppression and violence, I totally understand someone, particularly from a group marginalized or targeted by white, American evangelical Christianity, not giving art that comes from that place any of their time.

Well the onus is on you for not wanting to fact check as it leaves you ignorant. Personally I'd want to research to see if anything has changed. I never just take something at face value or read something and make a decision. I prefer looking into stuff.

I'm sorry if I contributed to that, I would never tell anyone what art to enjoy or not enjoy. I just wanted to offer why I understand coming from a certain perspective as it pertained to the current conversation.

If it's for someone that I'm hiring for a job or something like that, then absolutely. No kind of prejudice like that should be done on someone when it has to do with any kind of relationship or friendship or anything like that. But if it's for something like music, it isn't that important to just not want to listen as long as he's not like directly attacking the artist over it or organizing a boycott. Sure you can miss out on good music, but it's not direct harm to a person over their beliefs for someone to just choose not to listen over it.

    That's just my $0.02 though.

He left but was involved for a very long time and they did a lot of problematic stuff. Most things came to light but I live near the church and knew people in the congregation. A lot of fucked up stuff happened and Dustin was a leader at one point. Personally never stopped my enjoyment of his music even though I don't believe in God but I get why people are turned off at it.

To me, Joyce Manor sounds closer to the Weakerthans than Jawbreaker. I gotta listen again but I picked up a little bit of Alkaline Trio even haha.

I've honestly never looked into any of this. I just listened to the band because they write creative music and let lyrics about God go in one ear and out the other. Bothers me but I'm glad he left and hope he isn't homophobic (his lyrics never hint at that but you never know)

I don't hear the weakerthans almost at all. They're way more subdued IMO, aside from maybe a stray track or two off Fallow. I can get alkaline trio tho

Idk man left and leaving has some powerful Jams. Almost half the songs on Reconstruction Site are really driving (even though the other half are smooth country/pop/rock songs - kinda similar range of extremes as Yo La Tengo).

Just because his voice is softer (which, modern baseball's latest album also sounds closer to indie than punk in that regard) doesn't mean the band isn't absolutely ripping distortion out of everyone's ass at times. Try to picture the bands live. I guarantee you the Weakerthans are not subdued for most of it.
