I went to DFP 5,6,7 & 8. I definitely remember it being weird that for DFP 8 the Beastie Boys were listed as the headliner, but the Darkness and The Strokes actually played after them. Pretty sure there was some drama with the Strokes on stage cuz they were pissed to be playing to a half empty venue.

Same thing with Claus Fest 2002. Audioslave were listed as the headliner, but The Vines and Stone Sour closed it out.

DFP 6 was epic….SOAD…Korn….incubus…Jimmy Eat World

DFP 8 was wild…they had a morning side stage for the up and coming emo bands but for some reason they gave Brand New the first slot on the “main stage” since they had started to get some radio traction with Quiet Things…

I remember Beasties played then they made an announcement for people to stay for a special surprise so everyone wouldn’t leave before The strokes played and it was Jay Z performing 99 Problems…but then everyone left anyway lol

Dysfunctional Family Picnic, essentially the East Coast version of the KROQ Weenie Roast. Since it was a NYC station they still had insane pull in terms of talent but still not as much as KROQ in LA.

Was still bummed I was at school for Claus Fest, particularly 2003 w/Linkin Park, Blink 182, 311 and Brand New all playing one night at Hammerstein.

I'm gonna go ahead and challenge this. The WBCN River Rave in Boston was the Weenie Roast of the East Coast. DFP was lucky to book 4-6 bands each year. The River Rave consistently had a line-up that was bigger and deeper in the grand scheme of things.

They didn't have Limp Bizkit in 2000 but... That wasn't really what KROQ was about as a station. If you cross-check the line-ups year by year, the River Rave would hold hold up significantly better. Both as a snapshot of the time beyond like, the top 3-4 acts on rock radio and for alternative rock in general. And what would get people stoked today.

I went to that Claus Fest! Still one of the most memorable shows I’ve ever been to. 4 massive bands in a small 3500 cap venue, and for only 90 bucks a ticket.

Not sure what you mean by this, DFP would have like 10-12 bands each year.

DFP8: The Strokes, Jay Z, The Darkness, Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill, Brand New, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, New Found Glory, Story of the Year, Taking Back Sunday, Midtown

DFP6: System of a Down, Korn, Papa Roach, Incubus, POD, Jimmy Eat World, The Strokes, Hoobastank, New Found Glory, Hometown Hero

DFP5: Janes Addiction, Stone Temple Pilots, Blink 182, Staind, Linkin Park, Disturbed, Papa Roach, 3 Doors Down, Crazy Town, Adema

Damn, I miss these shows so much

Okay, I was off by a few bands. Point still stands. K-ROCK had some bigger artists every year or two because they were in NYC... But they were in no way, shape, or form the KROQ of the east coast. They were easily a step or two (or three) behind most other stations of the era.

And the active-rock focus on the line-ups above emphasizes that perfectly. Cool that they were able to book bigger artists because they were based out of NYC. But... That's not really what KROQ was about at that point in time.

Ha, I know way more about the modern rock radio landscape of the late 90's/early 00's than I care to admit to but I still think K-Rock, at least in terms of big name talent, rivaled KROQ. KROQ had more of a new wave legacy so they still tended to add Depeche Mode and No Doubt long after the harder stations abandoned those acts as well as, due the fact they used the turning stage, they could simply feature more bands in that timeframe. I know BCN was big but, if there was another challenger, it was HFS in Baltimore/DC as they were able to get the likes of Rage Against the Machine, Eminem, Chili Peppers, etc. all performing in their heyday. River Rave may have had a higher quantity of bands but, as an example, the same year System Of A Down and Korn headlined K-Rock's DFP, River Rave's biggest acts were like POD, Papa Roach and The Strokes.

Peak River Rave, in my opinion, is their '98 version with Green Day, Offspring, Blink 182, Creed, Everclear, Scott Weiland, etc. Essentially one-upped the K-Rock version without the addition of Third Eye Blind.

That's wild, given the lineup, nuts that people got into Never Let You Go and Semi-CHarmed Life. Wonder if they worked in some of their heavier songs like London and/or 1000 Julys.

Also, hope you caught Eve 6 that same day.

No clue if these are new or now, but...
