Obviously, Not Good, but isn’t the box office as a whole down year over year?

Box office is still way below pre-pandemic levels and will probably never recover as people got used to streaming and VOD. That's why the 300 million dollar budget is so strange.

I have not seen this yet - hopefully we're all gonna go on Sunday - but $295 million is an absolutely f---ing insane budget for any movie. Setting almost any movie up to fail.

Whoever approved that budget should be flogged.

About to grab our seats at the theater to watch this with my son. This is my first time going to a movie theater since 2019.

I bet he actually does it. You know there’s going to be a video message from him before the screening.

edit: I thought this was the Mission Impossible thread and the poster above had a special screening. Oops.

Well, I absolutely loved it. Phenomenal movie. Take nostalgia out of the picture and it's probably just behind Raiders & Last Crusade strictly on merit.

    Raiders / The Last Crusade
    Dial of Destiny
    Temple of Doom

    Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I think James Mangold's direction really shined during the action sequences, which is saying a lot going up against Steven Spielberg in his prime. That's some seriously big shoes to fill. If I'm being honest though, it is in the smaller moments and exposition scenes where I felt the lack of Spielberg's presence just a little bit. He's just such a master, and I feel like he really brings the magic to every single scene, even the ones that some other filmmakers might see as less consequential than the big scenes. The scene in Raiders in the study hall when Indy's drawing on the chalkboard explaining stuff to the two govt suits with Marcus looking on springs to mind. Not a knock on Mangold though, who I think is one of the best big Hollywood directors working right now.

I'm probably just on a high because this movie was my first time going to the movies with my son for something we both wanted to see, and also my first time back to the movies since before COVID, (and I've now had a martini after being outside in the sun all afternoon) but I absolutely loved this movie.

I like that Mikkelson’s character is like the world’s greatest physicist but is also so stupid to genuinely think “I’m going to go kill hitler, take over Germany myself, then not make the same mistakes he did”

Like they really missed a big moment for Indy to make fun of just how insanely stupid that is. It’s a great encapsulation of the worldview of the stereotypical STEM major who never took a liberal arts class and struggles to comprehend how history works

the opening hour of crystal skull felt like a warm bath after watching dial of destiny

it gets a little too silly and laissez faire by the end to call it a good movie, but I easily enjoyed it more. I love me a Spielberg actioner

They really nailed home the themes of don't get hung up on the past and the dangers of nostalgia with this one. But enough about the creepy de-aged Harrison Ford for the first 20 mins.

Really though, I did think this was actually pretty good! A lot of fun. A loved all the cast. Harrison Ford and Pheobe Waller-Bridge had great chemistry. Mikkelson was great as always. Boyd Holbrook was a fun dumbass shoot-first villain. Fun set pieces. Pulpy, but believable in the universe of the story. Overall, it's a decent addition to these films.

My biggest gripe is with the effects. I know much has been made of the over-reliance on CGI vs practical, but it really stuck out like a sore thumb here. There were a ton of really fun set pieces that lacked punch because they just didn't feel real. Indiana Jones running through the subway on horseback? Great, sign me up. Claustrophobic deep sea dive with a ticking clock? Sounds tense! But the environments for both just did not feel real enough to really pull me to the edge of my seat. A few of the action scenes went on way too long. You could easily trim 10 mins off this by shortening the opening and the Tangier chase scene.

And I know it'll never stop at this point, but for the love of god, please just recast for younger scenes. The whole opening was so distracting. The de-aging looked as good as it ever has and it was still so jarring. And it way overstayed its welcome, making it worse with every frame.

Gonna finally see this later this week but I just watched through the whole series for the first time in years with my girlfriend, who had never seen them before. 1 and 3 are obviously the best, 2 was a lot better than I remembered, and I actually even had a decent amount of fun with 4 besides the obvious weak parts (although these aren't as glaring as I remembered). I don't think this series is as hit or miss as most people say, I enjoyed all four

  23. Ending is certifiably insane but if anyone still thinks this franchise is founded in reality whatsoever, I have bad news for you. The hallmark of a good Indy movie is a number of sequences that feel like theme park rides or stunt shows, and this had many. Not perfect, but in a sense, exactly what it should be. I went with my dad and we had a blast.
