I'm definitely not trying to detract from the success of the single, just saying it didn't scale the heights a lot of people were predicting it would upon release. They're still tangibly popular, they sold around 100k first week right? That's hard.

 

Yeah something like that and they're playing bigger and bigger venues every cycle. I guess while they have good singles their fans are very much more devoted to their full albums than other pop acts

 

Too lazy to look up which was bigger but probably. I think the sound was still pretty big, I've heard it a lot. I judge how big a song is by if my mom and 8 year old brother know it exists and they know the sound.

 

I've never heard their music pop up aside from when I've tried listening to it and ive only heard one person irl talk about them before and it was in relation to one direction, but they pop up on some pop culture sites sometimes so while I wouldn't say they're big I'd say they're decently sized. But to me big is like 21 pilots or meaghan Trainor or something idk lol. Like largely successful but not a household name is big to me

I mean it's just how I personally classify things in my head. like it's not super important or meaningful in anyway. I'm fine with splitting hairs in my brain lol.

 

I heard "somebody else" at a bougie shopping area a couple months back and I almost tripped

 

34 on top 40 is absolutely nothing to scoff at especially for an international band

 

I don't know I feel so left out on which bands are cool nowadays, 80% of the bands mentioned here could be made up and I wouldn't know the difference

 

I never really know how to gauge a household name anyway. It's so subjective to who is around you. my mom only knows taylor swift and my dad ignores most things outside of metal and punk so I don't have a good barometer person. It used to be my lil sis but now she is old enough to look for her own music. Not that it matters but whatever lol.

Also, The Weakerthans are considerably better than all the other bands we've talked about (well I'd put Thrice close to them but for entirely different reasons)

Also how in the blue hell are we getting Jawbreaker out of Joyce Manor. Even harder to justify comparison than 3EB.

 

That is a terrible reason not to listen to a band.

 

Both started as punk bands and then put out their best albums after getting a little poppier

 

That doesn't mean they sound anything alike though

 

I think the way he writes his lyrics, the meanings are vague enough to be related to religion or something else. He has never been straight preachy though and I can think of a ton of songs that I couldn't related to religion if I tried. Band is incredible though, give them a chance by youtubing Yellow Belly

On that note though, Wolves at the Gate are really really preachy but I love their music so much I overlook it.

Never understood the love. They seem a little boring IMO.
