I rarely come into this thread though, so going back five pages to see if someone had posted that video yet would be very unlikely. If someone posts something I've already previously posted before, in any thread, I'm just like "meh" - feel free to post whatever you want

You could've replied to my post. We could've had a conversation, Ferrari. Think of all the universes that shall never come to pass. :(

As someone who infamously dumped Elden Ring before even getting past the tutorial, what makes that and Sekiro hard (or souls games in general)? Is it that the reflexes required to dodge/attack have to be so precise? Is it memorizing a boss pattern that's incredibly complex? Is it having too many attacks at your disposal and too many things to memorize? Is it having to have built your character in a smart way with the right mix of stats? All of the above? I always hear they're hard, but that can mean many different things.

I'll say that the difficulty is kinda overblown (I mean, they are difficult, but I feel like they're not nearly as intimidating as they seem), but a lot of it is tight combos from bosses that do require precision and also high damage output from bosses. Sekiro and the other FromSoft games are different due to the fact that Sekiro doesn't have "building" really and the others do, and the later games like Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring are different from earlier ones like DS1 in that they're more focused around difficult boss encounters while DS1 is more often trying to trap you and DS2 is trying to overwhelm you with enemies. But to summarize in a way that does address all of them, I find the difficulty in those games to be from the patterns, limited resources, and the stamina management (or in the case of Sekiro, posture management) causing you to have to be careful with the decisions you make and not just spam evasion or blocking tactics.

it has way less to do with reaction time than critical thinking and problem solving, plus some trial and error. Getting your build right, preparing with correct items, recognizing boss patterns all matter more than sheer input timing

I used to be very intimidated by character building in FromSoft games, but I've found a few principles helpful:
    1. Make sure you can hit the stat requirements for weapons you're using or want to use
    2. Make sure you have the stamina and FP/MP/whatever to do the combos you want to do and to carry the equipment you want to wear
    3. Crank up the vigor to the softcap desired
    4. If everything else is fulfilled crank up your main damage stats

Culex from Super Mario RPG and that last one or second to last one from Persona 5 original can both be rough if you don't level up your characters enough and have the exact right equipment.

Idk if it’s semantics but the learning curve on these games for a newcomer is extreme and a lot of people don’t have the patience to learn, which I totally get. Is that basically a difficulty thing? I think so? Once you get over that learning curve your realize that everything and anything is possible to achieve in these games.

Yeah you just kinda have to accept you're going to die as you learn. Stubbornness is the best skill to have in FromSoft games and once you get past that frustration it opens up a ton

I was certainly someone who had a hard time being patient enough for the games until one annoying bro told me I sucked at games and then the stubbornness kicked in

It’s the most rewarding gaming experience I have ever experienced finishing any of these games. It also teaches legitimately valuable morals and principles that have helped me in life! Not even exaggerating!

I didn’t think elden ring had too steep of a learning curve, it was my first fromsoft game and I was able to figure things out and feel like I had the hang of things without much frustration (but I also knew going in i was gonna die a lot and that’s okay). Sekiro has an extremely steep curve tho

also my pick is garrosh in the seige of orgrimmar raid on mythic difficulty. I’m sure other end of expansion bosses have been harder but that’s the only one I ever did on the highest difficulty and it was a fuckin doozy

also kael’thas in tempest keep during burning crusade has gotta be up there. MMO boss fights are in a league of their own. Which is why FF16 has such amazing boss encounters

There were a couple bosses in Baten Kaitos that I had trouble with, namely the first fight against the trio and the final boss. Not sure if I was just bad at the game though. Guess I'll find out soon with the remaster.
