"The Sound" is their highest charting single in the UK as far as I'm aware, so that's something

 

the sound was probably the 1975's best shot to get to 21 pilots level
it's not happening now

 

Maybe "Somebody Else" makes a late push? "Tear In My Heart" was the lead single on the 21P album, right? That wasn't the one to get big

 

Somebody Else is one of my favorite songs of the year but it absolutely would not chart high. It would need to have two minutes of the song cut to even be on the radio

 

I feel like lenght of many songs are just to long for the radio.

My favorite pop-punk record is The Offspring - Ixnay on the Hombre. It's where they started to get kinda poppy but hadn't entirely sold out yet lol

I never tried to get into Thrice, because their vocalist seems to be some sort of evangelical christian. Then again, somehow I still occasionally listen to Gaslight Anthem, although Brian Fallon denies evolution.

I guess that is an unpopular opinion.

I never understood why die hard Christians couldn't think that an almighty God that created the universe tweaked it's life forms over time thus causing evolution (because denying it is flat out wrong) but this is the wrong thread for that lol

Anthem/anthemic is a lazy descriptor for a song that reviewers don't have more interesting words to describe.

and they absolutely will continue to have a shot with subsequent albums

 

I think the obvious implication of the posts at the time was that it was gonna be their pop breakthrough, it wasn't. I'm not saying they don't have a large fan base but they didn't have a breakthrough the way, like, 21 pilots or chainsmokers did.

 

That's like top of the top though, they still got pretty fucking big this cycle. And they still have forward momentum. The sound was a sizable single at home for them and got some buzz here. Bigger than their other singles if I'm not mistaken
