Fair enough - if you sing 'I don't belong here' at the end of the intro, maybe you'll catch on to what I'm hearing and why I say it - still, that won't change the fact that you and plenty of others aren't making the connection upon hearing it first. I digress now that the overall feel is not the same at all, but the first 4 chords in isolation (which is all that was playing when you called in to the voice mail she set up) is Creep-esque. Raidohead had to give writing credits to The Hollies, and Lana Del Rey had to settle with Radiohead for similar uses of this progression (and because of that, it would make sense if there is already some sort of shared writing credit agreement in place).

Only thing I've seen this being compared to soundwise is See You Again by Miley lol

it’s amazing how much worse this has already gotten since the original publication. You’re taught as a session musician to be able to understand references. “Something Stewart Copeland-y” “like a Bonham thing could be cool” I’ve already been in situations where someone says “oh yeah, that’s got a cool so-and-so vibe to it” and the whole song gets scrapped. Or the musician who played it gets fired or has to come up with a whole new idea and the song gets completely changed regardless of how anyone felt about it prior. If any comparison can lead to fear of a lawsuit, we’re not gonna have any music left in 6 months

  5. Because of the previous copyright lawsuits she was in, and this being the sophomore album to an insanely big debut, there's now a GIANT magnifying glass on Olivia and her music because everyone's trying to find songs that her new single sounds like. Stop that and just enjoy the fucking music.

I still don’t think Taylor, Jack Antonoff and St Vincent should be credited on Deja Vu

Also just want to say I’m not trying to pick in @Helloelloallo or anything. This is just an issue that’s widely concerning and causes problems for myself and the entire industry

Not in the slightest! It wasn't even the same chord progression, it was literally chant singing in the bridge. Taylor, Jack, and St. Vincent did NOT create that concept.

They absolutely should fucking not. That's maybe the dumbest instance ever of a co-write being handed out.

  10. Until the H chord is invented and becomes the hottest chord to use in pop music, this type of thing is neverrrrr going to go away. And the more music that comes out, the more likely that someone's song is going to have the exact same chord progression, vocal melody, etc as another song. As long as they aren't directly ripping off another artist's song, I don't understand why using other songs for inspiration is such a huge deal. Maybe "Deja Vu" had a similar yelling part as Taylor's song, but Taylor didn't invent yelling vocals. Taylor's team shouldn't have gotten involved with Olivia's song whatsoever.

Yea that one is a total head scratcher. And I’m not too privy on how these things work but couldn’t they turn the credit down? Or was it them that sought credit?

  12. They came after Olivia for it, I believe.

This song doesn't sound like Creep, now SZA's "Special"...thats's basically a a Creep-knock off. But the producer said she told him to use Creep as a guideline for the track. Still a really good song though!

I obviously know nothing about fashion, but her ribbon top thing is the coolest fashion I've seen in a while, love it

It wasn't meant to be mean or dismissive, and purely stemmed from the circumstances of the radio show I listened to a week or so ago. She had a number that you could call, and it played the piano chords from the intro of the song and NOTHING else. Taken in isolation, that's the chord progression from Creep. Now - does the song sound like Creep? I have admitted to no, but out of sheer curiosity, I wondered if the writing credits would reference Radiohead or the Hollies since it's a somewhat more unique chord progression, and there was the instance on the last album with retroactive credits.

I like the song, I'm sure the album will be huge, and I'm sure she'll be a hot touring artist next summer getting all the accolades and credits she deserves. Also I love to see Dan Nigro's success and miss As Tall as Lions as I think growth from You can't take it with you would have been fantastic to hear.

My comment wasn't even really directed towards you, per se. This article is what really put me over the edge, haha. People who listen to music just to find the similarities and compare it to other music in this day and age really rubs me the wrong way. Even if "Vampire" does have the same chord progression as "Creep" by Radiohead, other songs do too that even came before "Creep." It's just a really annoying way to look at music and art in general.

It seems like it's only happening because it's Olivia Rodrigo, an insanely popular female artist who is under the microscope now because her debut album skyrocketed her into stardom, and this kind of scrutiny comes with popularity, I guess. You don't see every pop punk band in history getting dragged through the 1s and 0s of the internet for using the same C, G, A, F chord progression that million other bands used before them. No one gives a shit. Just leave people alone, listen to their music, don't listen to their music, and only call out the artists who are actually ripping off something more substantial than a simple 4-chord chord progression.

  24. I work from home and the power went out this morning so I was fucking puuumped! It was out for 2 hours but then it came back on 3 hours (!!!) before they estimated it would and I've been upset about it ever since. Also, I told my friend I'd see Nickelback with her tonight because a few months ago I thought it'd be funny, and now I reeeeeally don't want to go haha!
