Cursing just to curse is fucking corny but y’all are fucking corny as fuck for hating the cursing in this fucking song.

 

Olivia is just so good at dropping F bombs. There’s something so cathartic about the way she does it. I can’t imagine “Driver’s License” without them, for instance. Hall of fame profanity, honestly.

personally I love swearing, but from a songwriters perspective, if there’s already a fuck in each chorus, a third one in the bridge feels a bit cheaper. it’s just a lil clunky. but also it’s fine, not a big deal.

 

Dying at this being a real conversation on a website that started as a blink-182 fan page from a teenage boy that can’t go five seconds without swearing.

There's a theater kid ability to put really hightened emotions into the vocal that she just excels at. It's the crack in "blood sucker" that opens the door for "fame fucker" to go right up your spine. She's absolutely got It.

 

I believe we talked about her use of the F-word a couple years ago and you called the curse words in "Driver's License" "load-bearing." An accurate description!

Like, there are a few curses on Midnights that sorta feel like filling syllables to me (previously, she'd been amazingly judicious in her use of swearing). But I don't see how you can listen to Olivia so far and not think they're all selected with very deliberate and effective intentions.

I will preface this by saying I know not much about the music industry, and I could be totally off base, but...

As a very casual listener, it felt like to me that the buzz around Lorde fell off pretty hard after she followed up all her smash hits on her first album with Green Light. Not that Green Light was some huge experimental risky thing, BUT it was a very different sound from the singles I was getting ear blasted with all the time. And IIRC that song did get into the top 20, but I don't remember hearing it on the radio all the time like Royals, Team, and even Tennis Court. I know critically that 2nd album was praised, but as a casual radio listener and etc, it didn't seem to have the same sticking power as her first one did. I checked youtube to see how wrong I am and I definitely seem to be a little wrong as Green Light has like 120sonething million views, but that's still far behind Royals and half of Team's. But I just don't remember hearing the song on the radio a lot. It has more views than Tennis Court does on youtube, but radio stations and sat radio, I've heard Tennis Court on those more than Green Light.

If it's not obvious I'm using Lorde as an example because she seems like the best parallel here in terms of young solo female artist who blew up with her first album and was facing a lot of pressure with her 2nd. Maybe Olivia and her people wanted to lead off with a song that keeps the sorta same vibe and sound as how she was introduced to the world to keep the buzz going, keep people's interest before they, as you said, start to show some of the riskier stuff. But this is all just me doing pure speculation on shit I understand little about! lol

But yeah this song is pretty cool, I like it.
