Yeah I am planning on seeing them in November. I'm bummed that there isn't any announced support on our date though. All the support on the other dates are great. I have seen Old 97s like 5 times at least

I got into American Aquarium in 2015 with Wolves, which is still a great record. But their best, IMO, is Burn.Flicker.Die. which Jason produced! Title track on that one has such a unique sense of urgency about them. I think BJ Barham was just about ready to give up on music when he made that album, and it totally rebooted things for him. He and Isbell were at similar points then, so it seems like they really locked into each other in a really rewarding way.

Show starts in about a half hour, 6:30pm for me. Hoping the early start means he’ll play a nice long set. Hadn’t ever really listened to Deer Tick so I checked them out. Thought they were just alright but hopefully their live show will convert me. Overall, really psyched!

shockingly the dude that sings for them does maybe the best cobain cover/impression i’ve ever heard, but i agree their original stuff is a little meh

I saw BJ solo a few weeks ago and this is pretty much exactly how he described the BFD album right before he played the title track.

I saw them once at a local fair kinda thing and they were great. Crowd was awful though, some guys were pushing into us and and nearly got into a fight as I recall

Deer Tick wasn’t very good imo, but Jason put on an amazing show. Played 10 songs off the new album plus a bunch more. “Middle of the Morning” was one of the highlights live, which I wasn’t expecting. Great set!

  11. I love Cooley but Pattersons the ringleader and you’re definitely right that he has the most interesting voice

he has the most interesting voice but his songs can also be the biggest snoozers sometimes. part of why the last three or so records haven’t done much for me post-american band

  13. Hey my guy’s a volume shooter haha

But yes, since the Isbell era if it’s not close to 50/50 Hood/Cooley then it’s just not as good. That’s indisputable. Gotta say though even the songs Cooley has actually put on the last few haven’t done a ton for me, not like the stuff up through American Band where his songs were pretty much a lock to be excellent

i love slow ride argument and maria’s awful disclosures, but yeah otherwise i agree

  15. I mean they’re *good* songs but used to be if he only dropped a couple on the record they were gonna be stunners like “Pulaski” or something

for sure. i remember seeing some article that patterson gave, or maybe it was a jason tweet, where they said cooley only writes a song or two a year bc he tinkers too much otherwise. i could see, between the back to back of english oceans and american band where he is kind of the driving force of the band, him being a little burnt out

Got lucky and Amanda Shires was at the show tonight in Paso Robles, I don’t think she’s been on many this tour. The new songs absolutely rip live, the whole band is at the absolute top of their game right now.
