My entire concert history - all 100ish shows that were either at a venue or at a festival - is complete*

*does not include house shows, DIY / hole-in-wall spots that closed down a long time ago, cover gigs, and I omitted 1 or 2 festivals that were kinda obscure. My total number of shows is likely above 150 if you include all that.*

Not that I need anyone to click that link if they aren't curious, I just felt I wanted to anounce it cause it took so fucking long to do that lol. I was digging for all the support acts I played with, and every show that had a flyer, I found that flyer. LOTS of using the search function on facebook and in my email lol. In some cases I had to re-crop the image from a screenshot. Sometimes the show wouldn't come up with direct search terms, but I'd remember the guy who booked it or another band on it, etc

SideBar actually got bought and is getting resurrected by someone who's been really active in the scene forever, so that's a good story. Right now she's hitting a lot of obstacles with getting everything up to code but it should hopefully be open by next year.

Definitely miss WindUp Space but that area is already loaded with music venues lol. Joe Squared is still there, The Crown got revamped a lot since the pandemic, Metro Gallery & Ottobar are both there for hosting bigger bands, etc

DC got hit way harder in terms of venues shutting down. Losing both Velvet Lounge and Rock & Roll Hotel in the aftermath of the pandemic was a huge blow to smaller musicians having places to play. Now unestablished musicians are caught between really unprofessional venues that will just ghost your booking emails and overbook your shows (Runaway, Slash run etc), and venues that are a little overambitious and selective for bands without a performing resume (DC9, Comet Ping Pong). The Pocket is the one good small venue in DC that previously unkown acts can get booked at now.

I do have a resume but I'm trying to make sure I can sell that shit out when I do it, cause it's been years since i played at a high profile spot in the District

I don’t know anything about dc other than the big spots.

I haven’t been to the new Joe squared, although it’s probably not new anymore. Always love ottobar and metro, but in looking at the full calendars of both venues right now, there’s only two shows with bands I’ve heard of, neither of which interest me, which is a shame. Or maybe I’m just really out of touch/old.

It’s a slow summer, April-June was “awesome show” season in this area

also Ottobar and Metro are still only like 300 capacity, not gonna attract as many decently big names as 930 and Black Cat and Union Stage often do. It’s why most the bands we’ve heard of go to DC instead, Baltimore’s venues are either too small or too big for cult-famous (but not mainstream) punk and indie bands who tend to sell between 500 and 1000 tickets on tours.

Ottobar has brought in Foxing, Pianos Become the Teeth, Snail Mail, and MewithoutYou recently (I went to all four!) but all those shows sold tf out and Pianos / Snail Mail are from Baltimore so they had a good reason to be fond of Ottobar. I’ve seen David Bazan / Pedro play there a lot as well, but since his Control tour is a big tour he upsized to Black Cat in DC

The “new” Joe Squared has been there for years haha but I do remember the old one.
Bonus: bands got paid a percentage of bar sales… keep the crowd there drinking and you’d make hundreds
Minus: you had to do your own sound and you had to do a little bit of pandering to a dinner audience that mostly wasn’t there for you

I’ve played both. It was already the “new” setup when I came back up to Baltimore on tour in March 2017. It’s ultimately better for shows to have a dedicated bar/venue downstairs but I do miss how much they’d pay you out when it was all in the restaurant. They still are one of the best paying small venues for original music though.

So from a local music perspective Baltimore is more small band friendly

but from a professional music perspective DC is more friendly to midsize / independent label touring bands

tldr version of the above posts lol

What’s the deal with dc9 and pie shop? I want to see origami angel and they play three nights in dc in a row but I can’t make the union one

    DC9 is excellent but SMALL.

In a vacuum I highly recommend that one… great sound, great lighting, awesome burgers and a rooftop bar to boot. It’s pretty much my favorite small bar venue I’ve been to anywhere so far.

But Origami Angel has a lot of hype right now and DC9 might not be as fun if it’s sold out to the brim and everyone’s packed in there. So if that bothers you maybe I’d choose Pie Shop? They actually do sell pie lol

Both are in awesome neighborhoods, can’t go wrong. Love both the Cardozo/Shaw area and the H Street area, although H street IS better for your wallet if you’re on a budget
