not sure why you think I would read the rest of your long ass post when you start with this bullshit, I have given examples in this thread of bands I liked just as much as the 1975 that I stopped supporting and called out when I found it necessary. if it was a band I didn’t like I wouldn’t pay attention lol I don’t go around complaining about people in bands I don’t like anymore it was weird behavior then when I would do it and it’s still weird now when other people do it. plus I don’t think I’ve been particularly quiet about how I think the accountability thread and all it entails is largely bullshit and I’ll just say it now I think stuff like this shows a puritanical grip taking over “the discourse” and blowing things way out of proportion that I, again, do not think matter in the grand scheme of the world today. none of this is hidden, I am open as fuck about it on twitter and talk about it a lot. I’m surprised people are surprised this is my stance tbh. dc about the rest of your post tbh.

Its not weird to expect artists to recognize that the platform they have is an honor, and at the very least they should not use it for harm, and at the most, they could actually use it for good. Like or dont like the art, that's not an unreasonable ask of any celebrity these days. Most artists can achieve that middle ground soley by being quiet, something Matty doesnt know how to do.

You've lost me on your definition of real world impact, besides the example of abandoning DGD over sexual assault allegations, but having no issue whatsoever (and even being annoyed that other people do) with Mattys flippant comment about consuming extreme and violent pornography with racist overtones. Im not saying they're the same at all, but its odd you cant fathom a negative reaction to the latter and simply just find it annoying, performative, manufactured, etc.

    TLDR - more bullshit

A Japanese-British woman taking issue with non-Asian guys making jokes about Japanese people working in concentration camps really isn’t ‘performative outrage’ or ‘puritanical.’

Matt Healy is a POS but his band won't get 'cancelled' because they have lots of devoted fanboys who refuse to give up their favourite smug little indie band

Matty went on a podcast a while ago and laughed along while the hosts mocked the rapper Ice Spice for being asian, called her chubby and, consciously or otherwise, tried to delegitimize her as an artist. Semi related, and I’m not sure if it was the same podcast or not, but Matty also decided to tell a story about how someone walked in on him masturbating to porn that is specifically created to brutalize and humiliate women of color. People got pretty upset with him over this stuff and he more or less said “sorry you were offended but nobody cares”. Fast forward to the thing currently being discussed - Rina Sawayama, an artist signed to Dirty Hit (but more importantly for context, an asian woman), expressed her anger on stage that a person who behaves the way Matty did on that podcast has ownership and is directly profiting off of her art. Some people are hearing her and trying to empathize with her frustration and some others think what she’s frustrated by is a non-issue, just doesn’t matter at all

I think Matty is dipshit but calling him a POS is really blowing shit out of proportion imo. He thinks he’s an edgelord, he’s never really done or said anything to make me think he’s genuinely an asshole. People just want any reason to shit on him for some reason, it’s fucking weird

  10. Lol. Thinking you're an edgelord doesn't absolve you from co-opting or encouraging racism. Come the fuck on.

I don't think Matty is a piece of shit, but I do think as a general rule of thumb, if you do something shitty and someone says it hurt them, you should probably acknowledge that. Especially if you have a massive platform. This really isn't rocket science.

I didn’t say it did absolve him, did I? My point was that calling him a piece of shit, to me, is taking it too far, when he’s never shown himself to be even a remotely bad person.

And yes, I think he should apologize and own up to it. But at the same time I think this shit has been way blown out of proportion.

It's blown out of proportion because we're hearing about it so much, and it's the talk of every pop culture / music focused website. But it's NOT blown out of proportion that some people are upset about it. Separate the coverage from the act. He absolutely said some things on that podcast that people have a right to be riled up about (even if it doesn't cross your personal line). His attitude of it doesn't really matter, if applied to every instance of where it's just 'words / jokes', would put us back 5 years regarding the positive strides of inclusivity in multiple art forms.

I completely agree. But I more so meant it’s been blown out proportion by how people want to condemn him for it and treat him like he’s a literal nazi. People absolutely have a right to be upset with him and I’m not happy with him either, but the hate this dude gets for everything he does is insane to me

I think intentionally saying shitty things because you think it’s funny to be a piece of shit and not care that it hurts people close to you makes you a piece of shit.

I’m not saying he shouldn’t be allowed to make music anymore, but it’s fair to call him a piece of shit.

    Things have changed.

Does that somehow give Matty a pass or invalidate Rina's feelings? I don't understand your point.

I think this is why statements can be so important. There's so much information or misinformation out there about this situation. Some people are fine with calling him a racist nazi and move on, then there's the whole "well he didn't say it but he laughed along" and then the "the GG thing was a bit by Adam and not matty" like it's so exhausting. So when Rina goes up and says Matty did this and that and watches THIS, and allegedly owns her masters? it's like a never ending war between people who want to defend him because the information could be twisted or not and then the people who take things at face value and have made up their minds about him.

  21. I am fully aware that he didn't say the actual jokes, I don't think he's a nazi, but I still think laughing and playing into racist jokes when you have a massive platform sucks and Rina's feelings on it are 100% valid. Again, I don't think it's that complicated coming from someone who would just like him to do better

Basically all he needs to do is apologize to those he hurt and we can all move on with our lives. Not sure what else there is to do. If Rina called him out like that publicly he clearly hasn’t done it behind closed doors either.

  23. Yeah, I mean I'm gonna move on with my life regardless lol if it seems like I care, it's because I find it kind of shocking the way some people in here seem to be ready to dismiss Rina's feelings or frame them in some kind of bad faith light, which I think is insane. But of course this doesn't affect me personally, I'm not expecting him to do anything about it, I just think it would be the right thing to do and wish more people weren't so dismissive of her calling it out.
