I’m sure that’s probably somewhat true, unfortunately; I see a lot of people talk about No Pressure on Reddit, and I’ve never once seen someone post about Corrigan being in the band. It’s gross.

But Brand New quite literally did lose their career at the time, and on this site nobody openly talks about them, which I do think would remain the same even if they released something new.

(Of course, who’s to say what would’ve happened if they just ignored everything and kept being a band.)

Not to mention I wish people would stop throwing the word “canceled” around as if it even means anything when the overwhelming majority of people I see being discussed as worthy of being “cancelled” never lose their platforms and likely never change their behavior.

Meanwhile, right-wing extremists are openly stating and doing pretty much whatever the fuck they want to directly oppose “cancel culture” and it’s quickly become a horrifying world to live it as a result.

I think there are valuable discussions to be had and Matty is absolutely worthy and deserving of criticisms for the shitty things he’s done and said, but I take issue with the stance of “Interesting that this website picks and chooses who to cancel and who not to” as if anyone with a platform worth mentioning has ever actually lost it.

    It's all hell.

Isn't this just raising awareness that he's impacted people through his dumb words/actions, including an artist that is well supported on this site and that he should just fucking apologise?

Not everything related to being held to accountability should be labelled as cancelling.

Cancellation is a reductive term but most people on this don’t feel like discussing quite a few formerly huge bands with problematic members: brand new, saves the day, say anything, front bottoms, etc

I mean, Brand New was barely a band anymore, dropped Science Fiction, and then the allegations arose. I’m sure it was easy for them to just go recluse again considering they were largely recluse from 2011-2017 anyway. And I’m pretty sure their thread was locked so it’s no wonder no one posts about them on this site anymore.

But, man, if Dance Gavin Dance can keep chugging along as a band of pieces of shit with their fans openly stanning thy em and swancore, I would unfortunately bet my life that Brand New fans would come out of the woodwork if they announced a reunion.

Because someone came into this thread questioning why this website “cancels” other bands but not The 1975 and I take issue with that viewpoint because I don’t think it’s actually constructive or meaningful

Brand New is basically Voldemort on this site. People won’t even write their name.

All Time Low’s allegations seem to have hurt them a bit too.

I'm sure Jason would be flattered and I do quite enjoy this site but this site does not have as large of an impact as being deemed an artist is successfully "cancelled" when they are rightfully shunned on the site lol

It’s not! My only point was that problematic artists this site doesn’t go to bat for are not in the same league as Matty Healy saying dumb insensitive shit on a dumb insensitive podcast.

  12. An Asian woman calling out Matty for mocking Asian people is performative outrage? C'mon man. The weirdo Twitter stans that just want his head for every little indiscretion, sure. But what possible reason does anyone have for believing Rina is being disingenuous?

she literally did it during a performance lmao but not even talking about her

  14. Rina is absolutely making a valid point here and I don't care how much any of us like "It's Not Living...," we should acknowledge when someone like her speaks out. It's embarrassing that she has to be an artist with a platform for us to actually listen

I don’t agree her point is valid lol and it has nothing to do with liking this bands music, don’t cmon man me

  16. "I wrote this next song because I was sick and tired of microaggressions. So, tonight, this song goes out to a white man who...mocks Asian people on a podcast...I’ve had enough.”

Masters argument aside, what part of an Asian woman saying that is invalid

Pretty sure y’all are gonna get mad at me big time over this post but whatever this is just getting annoying at this point.

for me to think her point is valid I would have to think matty did anything wrong. I really don’t. I like the Adam friedland show, it’s funny, and even if I concede that what was said on that show was “over the line” I do not buy any argument that it actually matters in any real, tangible way. but more than that, matty wasn’t even the one who said the things she’s referring to about Asian people, he also doesn’t own her masters he owns a less than five percent share in the company that actually does so, yeah disengenuous to frame it that way tbh and I’m just gonna say it yelling about micro aggressions and podcasts over korn is fucking silly and, yes, performative. especially when the podcast was aired in what, February? like sorry I don’t think any of this matters as much as everyone acts like it does and that includes her. get mad at me for it if you must but im not gonna hide how I actually feel about this shit. it’s annoying.

  18. Yeah, I mean I'm not gonna waste any more time or space trying to convince anyone to care because it seems like we fundamentally disagree on the impact of racism, "ironic" or not, especially perpetrated or co-signed by someone with a massive platform. So I guess it is what it is

I'm not calling for Matty's head here. I like this band a lot. That's why I think it's imperative to amplify the voices of people he's hurting instead of doing cartwheels to excuse extremely dumb and objectively harmful shit.

Well, that’s good then. I just know on r/poppunkers I’ll sometimes open up a thread and scroll through and I only see people talking positively about No Pressure. I’m glad I’m apparently wrong/only seeing a small fraction of posts; I’m not trying to “make shit up.”

I’ve already seen twitter swifties unironically telling rina to release (Rina’s version). The point missed in her comments is insane to me.

I think you are 100% not reacting to this as you would if it was a band you didn't like, and on a radio show/podcast you had no interest. I'm judging this from only what you share on this site (that I've come across) - but that's just my impression.

I think some of it is is blown out of proportion and it dominating the 'pop culture news cycle' in an odd way, but there's more than a kernel of truth to it being a shitty look, and it's absolutely okay for a female artist (especially Asian) to say that they're upset being associated with that person, even if only professionally. Sure, it's Glastonbury and its topical at the moment, but I don't get what's so hard to understand about some people thinking he crossed a line, even if you personally don't.

I was in here posting about tickets, and travelling to see the band so I'm obviously not 'cancelling' them, but at the same time, I find it valid if anyone is upset enough to not listen to them, or already hated Matty and hates him more. The ghetto gaggers comment, and participating / laughing at some of the stuff said on the podcast is just not a good look no matter how you slice it. It's okay to allow a little nuance into this. I just avoid talking about the band to people if I don't know their opinion, and if people bring it up and are offended by it, I just avoid it. I don't know what I'd say to justify it. 'Ha, it's just comedy, that's his thing, he probably doesn't really watch that porn, just trying to shock people... and hey... he wasn't doing the impressions...just laughing and encouraging a little'

I also don't know what it means to matter in a real, tangible way and what your definition for that is... And as others have alluded to, there's tons of stuff that you have to be terminally online to know about even being said, and this site absolutely gives those people shit. The 1975 have been a 'darling' band on this site and are absolutely getting some special fanboy treatment from some people (and elsewhere on the internet - they are a ride or die type of band).
