  7. i don't want to murder anyone or have delusions that I would, I think probably the only way for any kind of world worth living in to exist is for a radical change that would probably involve violence, which would be bad. but I need you to understand that we currently live in a world wherein the interests of people who can afford submarine trips are violently enforced on the rest of us constantly. these deaths are from hubris enabled by exploitation and that's why they don't need sympathy. ultimately the force of 400 atmospheres of pressure is a fraction of what is unleashed on regular people on these people's behalf every second of every day

I don’t even think they need sympathy! And tbh I don’t know if Stencil dude is saying that either? He’s just side eyeing some of the open celebration of it as a not great way of attracting more people to your cause (at least that seems to be his main point to me). Maybe he’s expressing some heart felt sympathy for them too, but getting angry at people for that is dumb IMO. When people hear about other human being’s suffering a potentially horrific death, their general reactions aren’t usually “well wait how much money did they have?” Lol. And you’ll never really convince most people that’s how they should react imo.

I tend to think the internet has made “relative indifference” an underrated reaction to have. I think it’s pretty natural to feel some feelings for the folks on the sub in a human sense, but not be so upset about it that you care all that much beyond “man that sucks for their loved ones, really sucks for the kid who wanted to please his dad, and I’d be REALLY sad if it happened to me or someone I love”, but then quickly moving on with your life and not dwelling on it and acting like it’s some 9/11 level tragedy, nor posting repeatedly about how they “got what they deserved” or whatever and acting like it’s some great class victory lol. Like we don’t have to make ourselves the center of the story by getting in our feelings about it, nor do we have to celebrate it happening as if it’s some great thing that happened and we’re glad those people died now piss on their corpses, etc. It didn’t really change anything other than maybe now a few less billionaires die in the near future because they become a little more risk adverse in the near term. That’s probably a net-loss from the anti-billionaire point of view!

Besides, there’s already a better ocean story playing out the class warfare wish in a much better and cooler way. Unfortunately no one will ever take seriously enough the idea that its entirely possible that intelligent animals are literally fighting back against what we’re doing to their homes and safety now, but watching a bunch of multiple millionaire/billionaire’s unnecessarily large boats get wrecked by the nature they disregard has been pleasing.

“Everyone knows Hitler is bad” feels like an all timer of a tweet starter. That’s starting your campaign commercial with “I’m not a witch” levels

All I'm gonna say on the matter is that all of the more conservative folks I work with (from actual conservatives to traditional democrats) have been making and sharing the same jokes the past week as I have seen by more leftist folk. So I don't think this event is as big of a barrier to the cause as that dude is presenting.

Of course correlation is not causation and all that

Not sure I understand this post. Is he saying Biden’s approval ratings haven’t recovered because of lingering dissatisfaction with the Afghanistan withdrawal?

i think more just making the point that Americans were gonna hate the withdrawal no matter how much they said they wanted it because it was always destined to be a mess, and for a lot of the middling folks out there that were like “yeah sure I approve” before it because they don’t pay attention to stuff as much are now “yeah I disapprove now that was a mess” and you don’t have much of a chance to change their minds on the approve/disapprove polls

But his post says Biden "never recovered" from something that happened two years ago. Pretty sure Afghanistan is very far from your average American’s mind these days.

Trende has done this for the last 4-5 decision cycles now. Basically I think the general rule is they try and split the decisions equally so everyone gets the same amount of majority opinions to write? I think? It obviously doesn’t always work out evenly but apparently that’s how they tend to do it. Otherwise I think the general rule is the most senior member on the winning side gets to decide who writes the opinion

I think that’s kind of the point…like that event soured a lot of the middle of the road people and there’s no real major singular event that’s going to turn that around
