Wasn’t that around the same time the Giants went out and splurged on total bust Kenny Golladay and were using, like, Darius Slayton as their WR1 because Barkley, Shepard & Golladay were constantly hurt and Evan Engram continued to disappoint?

beggars can’t exactly be choosers here. The Chiefs at least had an excuse to under utilize him because 1) he did not have an off-season with them to learn Reid’s whole complex playbook, the nature of the situation only allowed him to learn enough plays to be a gadget 2) Kelce, Juju, Hardman is still way better other weapons than Daniel Jones had at the time the Giants were 3 WRs down and still refused to use Toney.

This is a first round PICK and you’re telling me the Giants, a team with 3 injured weapons and an underwhelming TE and a QB who isn’t even good at throwing downfield, simply benched their best underneath weapon and traded him because he wasn’t good enough? That story doesn’t fly at all to me.

Good route running or not, if a team with no weapons can’t use his elite elusiveness as a weapon then their coach needs to get out of the NFL. You can turn a guy like that INTO a great route runner, and develop him as a serious weapon in the short yardage range (a la Julian Edelman), if you’re patient with it.

i definitely agree that race plays a role in the way players are characterized. my evidence is that i can't think of a single white player who has been deemed too outspoken off the top of my head unless it's for bullshit right wing off the field stuff

The ONE GAME Toney got full time snap counts as a Giant, he had 10 catches for 189 yards

acting like it was a talent issue makes no sense at all to me

I think Darius Slayton can low key play as a WR3. Yeah, Kenny Golladay and Sterling Shepard were hurt for a ton of the season. So was Toney. You can’t dunk on Golladay and Shepard for their injuries and excuse Toney for his. Dude missed time in training camp with an injury, among other things. We all know Joe Judge sucked as a coach. It’s truly not uncommon for any coach to slow play their rookies, especially if they’re raw like Toney was/is.

It’s also worth mentioning that plenty of players who don’t pan out to be good at football also have eye-popping box scores from time to time

I’m just saying, the Jaguars once turned 190 pound fifth round pick college quarterback Denard Robinson into a 100 yard rusher because they didn’t have any other good weapons at the time. And this was with a bad coach.

If Toney really was injured that whole time then I’d agree but there was a stretch where he wasn’t, and the Giants were desperate at WR, but Judge was keeping him on the bench and complaining about his attitude. Which also makes me question if the team designated him as injured for a longer time than he actually was unable to play because they were trying to humble him or something.

I’m not bringing up the other WRs injuries to criticize them, I’m bringing them up to illustrate that the Giants absolutely did get in a position where their best option *was* to try to scheme the ball to Toney in creative ways. They had a guy who proved to them he can turn 10 mostly short / simple passes into 189 yards, and decided they’d rather have a shitty offense instead. The whole situation just sounds like half the reason the Giants gave up on him was not football related.

I’m sure there’s some truth to that. I also think it’s time to lower expectations on Toney at this point in his career

We can definitely agree on this midway point. I probably was exaggerating a little bit, I do tend to do that when I get passionate about a specific part of a discussion

I absolutely believe there were a lot of contributing factors to where Toney is now, between his own individual play, his myriad of injuries, and Joe Judge. I’m not putting it past Andy Reid to figure out how best to deploy him, but there are other guys there too competing for roles too:

MVS is just a guy, but I think he’s a fine WR3 (that unfortunately looks like the WR1) and offers a combination of size and speed that no one else in that WR corps has. Justin Watson is a physical blocker and that keeps him on that team time and time again, as he’s a guy they play more than people think due to his blocking.

They invested a second round pick into Skyy Moore, who is likely the most direct competition to Toney, but they also invested a second rounder into Rashee Rice, whom GM Brett Veach has already stated is a guy who they think could do some of the stuff JuJu did for them last year.

My guess is MVS will be their starting X receiver, then the competition for the flanker and slot roles will be between Moore, Rice, and Toney, but Watson will mix in. Hell, they also signed Richie James, who offers special teams experience as a returner, which could ultimately land him a roster spot. It’s a very unsettled group right now.

I also would like to acknowledge that I’m still sensitive about this stuff. Not exactly gonna forget how half of society responded to the BLM protests. That was only 2-3 years ago. I think race plays a factor in a lot of things, I do think authority figures and media outlets (in every context - including sports and entertainment) continue to actively preserve that subtly racist status quo, and I’m not going to apologize for pointing that out when it might be uncomfortable or it might not be “proven”
