Got fired from job 2 today

I was not expecting to get fired from hearing aid company and it has certainly hurt me financially but I think it was a blessing in disguise. I have felt so much better overall not having to do that shit

They blamed it on a “re-org” but I saw this coming a mile away

Like fuck I genuinely prefer just being back at a hotel restaurant and supplementing that income bartending for 2-4 hours at a comedy club,

than trying to make commission by hoodwinking old people with limited retirement income and other bigger health concerns, into thinking a hearing aid is more important than it is. I could’ve made way more money doing that if I really got good at it but I had objections in my conscience to what I had to do to “get good” at it.

They tried to act like “oh we’re helping people they put off hearing aids forever because they’re biased against them, our job is to get them comfortable with the idea”. But that is not how it actually works in practice. Half the time they really did not have the money or time to get a hearing aid and my bosses still expect me to stay on the phone for 20 minutes trying to convince them.

The other half the time, sure they had the money and maybe have worn hearing aids for a long time, but then the battle is, people who have good careers or retired from good careers have good health insurance. And then we were expected to try to convince them they can get the same benefits from us out-of-network (which flatly wasn’t true a lot of the time), and get them to commit to the payment before they do their own research. Most of those people weren’t stupid and eventually reached out to their insurance company anyway, but I get blamed for not properly explaining how superior our process is or whatever, if that appointment gets cancelled - even if they’re legitimately saving thousands of dollars going in-network.

I do believe healthcare companies can get a lot worse than that one, but I just don’t like being deceptive like that, I’d rather upsell restaurant food and drinks etc cause it doesn’t matter and actually affect someone’s livelihood. Being on the phone for 5 hours a day already sucked but the subtext was “we need you to be more subtle and deceptive to bring in more money” and they wouldn’t say it out loud but that’s what they expected. If their social security check is $2000 I’m not going to recommend they sign up for high interest financing to buy a $6000 hearing aid lmao

 

Anecdotal, but we tried for ages to get my grandma hearing aids and she refused. I attribute a lot of her cognitive decline to being almost deaf for a few years

 

on the one hand, glad you have job 1 to fall back on

on the other hand, can’t imagine dealing with the stress and negative emotions of getting fired but still being expected to work a different 9-5 while it’s happening anyways

Update for my friends here:

It’s early but it’s looking like my first tour since 2018 is going to be this November, and it’ll be upper east coast. Richmond to NYC and potentially up to CT and Boston if I can swing that.

Looking like I’m also gonna do a short Midwest run (western PA, Ohio, Indiana, Detroit & Chicago) in March (hopefully I get lucky and don’t hit a lot of snow).
