Beyond the poster on Gwen’s wall, is there any reason those people would say this is more woke than the first one? Maybe the first movie got a pass as it came out before the anti woke stuff got as big as it is today. Those people are so freaking weird.

i think my favorite scene in the movie is the miles-gwen swinging / spider-man competition scene. first off, mona lisa is a bop and fits the momentum and feel of the swinging sequences so well

next, it's refreshing to me to have a major hollywood superhero movie wherein the love interest is on a complete equal playing field with the lead, with similar roles and abilities, rather than the just the object of desire or protection. they can have fun together and understand each other rather than being distant and closed off and tortured and toxic. we don't see superheroes date each other in movies! every spider-man movie up to this point (besides spider-verse obviously) is about how the hero is responsible for the wellbeing of someone much less capable than him. variations on the superman-lois lane thing. the dynamic in spider-verse reminds me of miyazaki stuff like mononoke. hero's journey less as an individualistic power fantasy and more as coming into your own as a person and realizing your potential, establishing a collaboration with others in the same boat as you. whether it's a romantic connection or not

I just love it. Feels fresh in its context. not to say people with opposite abilities can't compliment one another, but in major superhero fiction it's usually a one-sided dependency. batman comics have gone in a cooler direction in the past couple decades by making catwoman the partner rather than the antagonist to be feared. score exactly one point for jeph loeb (he's now at -230,506)

Also, searches for "Miles Prower" spoil the end of this movie now. Sonic fans stay losing

If this WAS intentional this movie is on another level

  7. that's definitely the take on Gwen i keep seeing from a couple of black creators I follow on tiktok, who, by the way, are being criticized for "hating on" Gwen when they're really just pointing out that she's kind of a bad friend in this movie.

I wouldn’t call Gwen a bad friend. From her perspective she was saving Miles and the entire world by not letting him save his dad.

Fandom loves to “stan” these fictional characters with such defensive fervor that sometimes Jean Grey stans are called “jarbz” & Scarlet Witch stans “warbz.” These made up superheroes are these fans’ close friends and “smol” cinnamon rolls or whatever the fuck, instead of tools to be utilized for storytelling. God forbid some writer breaks up Peter Parker & MJ to tell messier stories, or ages up Superman’s son Jon Kent to make him more interesting (instead of some twee Superboy who does his homework before hanging out with Damien).

Gwen is my favorite character in this particular chapter for a variety of reasons, and her fucking up on being a true ally is more of an asset to that than a hindrance. It’s certainly a more compelling story detail than her being a perfectly unproblematic paragon from the start who looks at the camera and gives a PSA about her privilege, using all the proper lingo to appease liberal readers’ guilt.

I know that superheroes were originally intended for children, lol, but that doesn’t mean cape comic fans need to be childish. Y’know those corny “comics aren’t just for kids anymore” ads DC put on their books in the 80s? These dorks should use that as permission to grow up in how they enjoy these things, lol.

lol, nah. “Cynical” =/= “upset.” Lot of nonsense out there, but I’m having fun with it.

I saw a video where it said miles still hasn’t learned what comic con is in the movies and now I hope he finally finds out in the third movie

The one thing these movies still have to do is take a giant shit on Brand New Day

Depicting Peter as happily remarried with a kid is close but they could be more overt about it

Looks like this is taking back some of the Dolby showtimes at my local AMC starting this weekend due to The Flash bombing

Haven't read the whole article and this doesn't downplay any of the criticisms of the working conditions but starting this with

"Phil Lord and Chris Miller — and in Hollywood, they are always referred to as Lord and Miller; never Miller and Lord"

    rubs me the wrong way

Oof. Definitely awful working conditions and they need a union fast. Have I loved everything these guys have produced? Yeah. Do I think their work should continue on in this manner despite the conditions because they produce great art? Absolutely not. It sounds like Lord in particular has developed quite the reputation and 100% needs to be reigned in. Worst part of the article is Amy Pascal hand waving it all away with that same old Hollywood bullshit excuse, “welcome to making movies.”

No. Unacceptable, flat out. If that’s how you view it, you deserve to be removed and replaced by someone who will fight for human rights and unfortunately Hollywood is occupied by execs who truly only care about the bottom line. Found this in the comments under the article as well and it speaks volumes:

i did two years on this and on the first and Lord being a non controllable task master credit grabbing a hole is the open secret in animation. spends years, makes a giant dead person pile full of geniuses then he and his partner climb it to grab the awards and marketing executives like pascal helps them up. lot more than 4 people feel this way they are just scared.
