1) natural hole in the zone. We tried to do a weird blitz where Lloyd becomes an edge rusher and Josh Allen drops back. It’s a cover 3-related concept.

The play Reid called, forces Andre Cisco to maintain a certain depth until the ball is thrown, rather than coming down for the PBU - because if Mahomes pump fakes to Kelce and he bites, the post route would be wide open where he was supposed to be. So he has to prioritize it, and wait; because it’s not the CBs job to come across the field with the post route (he’s in a sideline zone). Better to give up an underneath pass and tackle than to be too aggressive and give up a TD behind you.

So, then it’s all on Josh Allen to cover Kelce, which is already a mismatch. But his side of the field has a WR running a streak (and clearing that corner downfield) - so he knows he’s the only guy on that side of the field underneath that. So he conservatively stays to the outside.

Kelce does a good job reading this. Maybe a good coverage LB would know, based on the situation, to follow Kelce, but Allen’s more of a pass rusher who CAN cover. So all Kelce has to do is pretend to go outside and then come back in as soon as he’s behind Allen. That was Reid winning the play calling battle with a play that is designed to attack the kind of looks we were coming out in at the time.

2) That’s just a good play design. The OLB has to make a choice who to cover and he correctly picks the outside guy. However, Kelce is subtle about pretending to block so the ILB doesn’t notice that Kelce is peeling off a block and becomes his coverage assignment until it’s too late (that’s Foye Oluokun, #23, and you can see that he knows he whiffed on the assignment the minute he loses the angle on Kelce). That’s a really hard play to see coming and stop, that’s why it works so much - KC calls that TE fake block route a lot. Having a TE with that kind of YAC ability is the reason why it gets first down yardage and not 3 yards.

3) Kelce just bodied the shit out of Rayshawn Jenkins here at the LOS and then Jenkins was playing catch up the rest of the route. Once you get moved off the spot / lose physical leverage, the only way to stay in phase is aggressive recovery speed and instincts. We tried to put a safety on him to handle his physicality and Kelce still just too fuckin strong to be press covered at the line.

For the record, I blame our offense more for only scoring 20 points than our defense holding them to 27.

Like, it’s literally not “no one wants to cover Kelce”, Reid is extremely good at exploiting the fact that his offense is too good for teams to call man-to-man. Teams end up getting forced into zone by Kelce (and formerly Hill as well), but then that’s exactly where Reid wants you cause he can stay ahead of the play calling battle against zone - especially since most teams have zone tendencies and don’t change it up as much as they should. Plays like that are gonna happen to every non-elite-defense team who plays Mahomes, Kelce, and Reid.

 

Gotta let Juju or Mecole Hardman or whatever beat you. 100% of the time Kelce needs to be hammered for all 5 yards allowed.
