Actually, I saw Anthony Green open for Thursday last year and he played nine songs, three of which were covers, and it was easily my least favorite solo set of his that I’ve seen him play. The setlist overall was strange and the vibe was weird.

 

I mean I’d never claim to be Kendrick’s peer lol. Most of his songs are absolutely uncoverable. “These Walls” reads almost like a disco song, though, and isn’t lame on a guitar like other songs would be.

He also kinda sticks to the same rhythm and meter in that song and doesn’t change up as much as he routinely does in other songs on that record. The other records are just not suited for guitar covers at all, TPAB in particular is very focused on the instrumentals being performed rather than programmed.

 

i am okay with one cover for a headlining band’s set at a venue. Two is gratuitous. And if you’re not headlining and playing more than an hour, then please don’t do a cover.

“cover gigs” are different though, that’s me doing very limited promotion and practice and selling no tickets and just showing up to play the songs I already play anyway for money lol. The cover shows / street busking sets are not for Terrain’s main audience, they are to entirely random audiences so that I can raise money to put into Terrain lol. and sometimes to gain new followers outside the “scene” who otherwise might not have a reason to go to local shows (or maybe they do, but with different circles of people).

Yeah and I was admitting that I am not that but I can still put a decent spin on ONE of his songs lol

 

Would it be weird if it was just karaoke with no guitar, or if I tried to sound like him, yeah lol. Both of those would be lame. I think it’s hard to envision when we’re just talking about it.

 

I also have different optics than the typical cover musician haha. Like if 4 chords Jimmy is stuttering over his words in a Kendrick song yeah that would make me walk out too haha. But I do it cause it’s a good fit for my skillset / appearance. comes off a little better when it’s a black guy who can actually rap and is actually keeping a backbeat by hitting the guitar

…..but at the same time, ain’t no bud light boat shoe 50 year olds want to hear my version of Tom Petty lol and I don’t want to play that shit either. So that’s why I can’t get cover gigs lol. But my hip hop covers are among the most popular ones I do. @JoshIsMediocre likes my Ludacris one lol

I simply would just not set out to do cover gigs to avoid the issue entirely

 

I once went to see him in a small club instead of going to a football game my friend had tickets to. He just like vibed out for almost half the set lol he only had maybe one or two albums then but shit, it was bad.

 

I generally enjoy covers. We The Kings covered Jimmy Eat World on the fly to make fun of me once. Prob the one I liked least haha

 

yeah I saw that show in Pittsburgh and his set was weird/not great.

that’s back where I’m at lol. I just thought at this point in my musician trajectory that getting a cover gig would be easy money, only to learn that actually getting the gig is annoying for all the wrong reasons lol

I did concert promoting and the first show I ever did was Jimmy Eat World. 2nd was New Found Glory and We The Kings and a typo left Jimmy Eat World on their schedule in their dressing room so they played the middle
