Idk. I definitely think Claypool was overvalued by the Bears relative to what Claypool has shown as a player, but I don’t even know if Evans would fetch a second at this point in his career knowing that he’s in his 30s and in a contract year. I still he’s good, but I’d be surprised if someone offered the Bucs a first for him.

If they are bad enough to get a qb next year you’d probably want to keep him to help out

Cover gigs are dumb and I’m tired of trying to get them

It’s even more nepotist and gatekeepy than the actual music industry is

bar owners trying to make decisions about musicians is a lot like Elon Musk trying to make decisions about Twitter.

Like, your acoustics sound like shit, you don’t even have a sound guy, and you clearly could make more money with a little variety and diversity in your live music selection than the Coors Light crowd who comes for your Tom Petty covers, but they’re soooo arrogant and dismissive at the same time & behave like Hesh telling Christopher that the band he manages is “just not a hit”.

examples off the top of my head:

I can get booked in (small) ticketed venues in like 30 cities across the east coast for original music that no one’s heard of, but I can’t get booked at any of the bars / cafes down the street to play simpler popular stuff. Ridiculous. And it’s hilarious because 60% of these joints don’t even have good cover bands! They sound off brand and off key as shit sometimes lol

I’ve tried really hard to find a happy medium. I can’t fake it if I don’t like a song but I have compiled a list of songs i cover that are popular. Some of them are, like, most people have heard of this - like I can do songs by Kendrick, Ludacris, Nelly, several by Jimmy Eat World, Radiohead, Death Cab For Cutie, & corny 90s bands I like such as Barenaked Ladies and Train. I’ll play several Green Day and Blink 182 songs if I have to to fill space. That’s just a handful of examples. I can easily learn more of these. I’m learning Tears for Fears songs right now haha.

and then there’s stuff that’s popular “for the genre” like the catchiest most crowd pleasing songs by Bright Eyes, Built To Spill, Sonic Youth, Smiths, I have a Fugazi one for the DC punk locals, I can play literally hours of Elliott Smith songs, etc. This is stuff I play if I’m given more leeway at like a street festival, or it’s what I’d play at a place that’s actually music related (Luna Garden is the cafe next to this area’s biggest record store, for example. Joe Squared USED to be cool because it’s a good restaurant and a music venue also.)

but I’mma be deadass honest with you it’s already a lot of work playing the stuff I play, so while I like and respect pop music more than my pretentious ass did when I was younger…

no I do not want to go through Lady Gaga’s musically esoteric discography and transcribe complex dance music songs onto basic ass guitar chords. no I do not want to cover that damn overplayed Jason Mraz song I never liked. No I do not want to play corny power ballads and the same AC/DC / Guns N Roses song every other annoying guitarist plays just to please the boomers. And that’s the glass ceiling for me.

It’s hard to get gigs that are a good fit for what I do, even though it’s really not that deep and if you just chill and let me do my thing, people will like it. I street busk and that works so there’s no reason why this wouldn’t lol

Only chance I’m playing a cover is if a band I’m in is playing a Halloween show with other buds and we’re all just doing cover sets.

Just significantly more interested in making and playing my own music with others.

I am too but like, getting paid more than I make at restaurants just to play songs I enjoy for 3 hours is a good deal, at least on the surface haha. Being a cover band would NEVER take priority over my own act but I’d do it once a week to build up some savings. But the hard part is actually doing it the way they want you to do it instead of just embracing what you’re already good at

I’m pretty good at classical / ragtime piano as well, but that’s also a very specific niche… most places would only host me for tips (like the comedy club). I’m not that ridiculous jazz pianist who can just sight read complex music, both hands, and improv parts of it. Those are the guys who get PAID to dress in a suit and play piano.

I can get into a recorded cover. I would prefer bands and artists play their own material live verses a cover, especially when they have larger discographies and have a difficult time representing every album in their set.

With that said, I’m also not going raise up a pitchfork and make a big deal out of it if it’s one song.
