Which @whitenblue88 and I are aligned on, is Super Bowl hero Adam Vinatieri

Tucker vs. Vinatieri is actually kinda a Nerd's version of Mahomes vs. Brady where one is unquestionably more physically gifted than the other, but the others resume is so "what the actual fuck" for their position lol

    The rivalry is back on

also similar in that goat kicker/Brady each have 13+ more seasons on their resumes than the challengers, and it’s not really a question until we get the next decade or so of data which will make it pretty clear one way or another

it’s not though, Tucker is better? He has 9% better overall accuracy than Vinatieri - and the best of all time at 90.5%. Harrison Butker is the only other kicker with over 90.

he has the best accuracy from 40+ (84.3%) by a margin of 5% (no one else has over 80%). He also has the best accuracy over 50 (74%), despite being top 5 on the list of 50+ yard kicks made (52 - seven more than Vinatieri made in his whole career).

And, he made 65 STRAIGHT field goals in the fourth quarter or overtime (obviously includes every game winner he kicked in that 7-ish year span). The only reason that streak isn’t still going, is because he attempted what would’ve been a record-breaking 67 yard kick against the Jaguars last year. And that’s not even a knock on him - considering the record he would’ve broken, is his own (66 versus the Lions)

We can talk about being put in more playoff situations but that’s not a kicker stat the way it is a QB stat, the kicker didn’t have a huge hand in making your team a playoff-competitive team. They’re a cherry on top. For all intents and purposes Tucker is the best AND most clutch of all time, regardless if the Ravens can live up to the impossible standard of the Patriots dynasty in terms of superbowls and AFC championships.

I don’t mean to simply dismiss playoffs here, but when it comes to a kicker they can’t really control the situations they get put in. You can only judge them off what they do in the games they do get to play a role in.

Like look I’m sorry the stats do matter especially when your whole job is a binary “you made it or you missed it”. It’s not complex analysis here haha.

If Vinatieri even sniffed Tucker’s percentages or field goal streaks he might have an argument based on doing it in the snow in the playoffs more often. Tucker doesn’t even play for a city that snows that much, much less does he play for a team that earns a lot of home playoff games. It’s not a comparison you can even make.

Have we not learned by now that stats matter specifically when I want them to matter, and they don't matter specifically when a human being is kicking a football through a blizzard to kickstart a dynasty...twice? (Yeah, I did it. I'm not sorry.)

“Prime Justin Tucker” is probably the third easiest decision to make if I’m asked “which player at each position would you take”.

second easiest is Ray Guy (still by far the best punter ever), and easiest is Jerry Rice.

Maybe if we count kick returners, Devin Hester is also unquestionably my answer

I will bet @EntryLevelDave money that if Tucker gets a GW field goal opportunity in the playoffs, in heavy snow, he will make it
