There are direct references to other Spider-Man media/“lore” (especially in this one), but they’re mostly just set dressing & chances for fandom to go “oh wow, I remember that!” This animated Spider-Verse series really is its own standalone series in any way that matters.

I’d personally recommend watching the first one before this for the story. But, if you’re just in it for the fun animation craft on a big screen, you can probably get by? They do spend a fair amount of time refreshing the audience on the main beats, though that’ll feel more like info dumps if this is your first. You just won’t appreciate the story at the core as much without that context.

(Also, know that this is very much so part one of a two-part story to be continued next year. So, expect the pacing and cliffhanger ending to reflect that.)

I listened to the soundtrack after and the way metro blended every song together using parts of the movie was so dope.

hummingbird was my standout for sure.

    I agree with this review

‘Across the Spider-Verse’: A Dazzling Film Left in Suspended Animation

even though they try to make Gwen's arc resolution the "climax," the movie doesn't have an actual ending.

which is appropriate as a comic book style two parter, but as a self contained movie, ehh. even infinity war had a compelling ending. empire strikes back too. gotta watch it again though

I also like his critique of "mumbattan." definitely felt like an entirely western filter of Indian aesthetics

First half of this was fantastic, but then it kept just adding more and more and more and more stuff, where then individual moments started losing their emotional punch

Just saw this with my partner and son, loved it more than the first one! And that's saying a lot because these are the best spider man's IMO, I'm still processing it, but mann the visuals were so fucking stunning, my eyes even hurt a little, what an experience I can't wait to own this!! I need and immediate re-watch! Listening to the soundtrack now!

What’s the name of the song playing when Miles and Gwen are sitting (hanging?) on that building in Brooklyn and just having a conversation? I was really vibin’ to that in the theater

I am reading people say it’s on the deluxe version of the soundtrack that hasn’t come out yet. There’s a few songs in the movie that aren’t on the official soundtrack.

I enjoyed this for the most part. I think some of the scenes/moments dragging a little longer than they had to and this being a “part 1” has me rank the first film slightly higher. The ending was odd and I’m not a big fan of where it ended, but other than that I don’t have many complaints.

Also the first 15 minutes of my showing had really low volume for the sound, but the trailers ahead of it were fine so I guess it’s the sound mixing in the film that’s kind of wack.
