Saw this last night after a long day and was drifting in and out for 45 minutes. That says nothing of the quality of the movie. Really liked what I saw. It boggles the mind how they combine all those different art styles together. Gonna see it again to have an opinion on the movie. Will say that it did feel like the movie ended about five times.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

yeah the first film felt so refreshingly uncompromised by all the studio bullshit, not the case here unfortunately

Taking my kids to see a Spider-Man movie for the first time in theaters this Sunday and I am so hyped over how excited they both are. My son’s been asking me for weeks if it’s out yet and my daughter is in love with Ghost Spider so it’s really cool to hear how much of this film is devoted to her character. I’m excited about that for her. I bought her a Ghost Spider t-shirt hoodie outfit so she can wear it. She wanted to wear her Halloween costume from last year, but it’s going to be nearly 90 degrees that day and she’d be dying. Going to take every excuse I can to post this picture again lol.

Holy shit that fucking rocks!! Her stance is perfect. See if she would enjoy you getting her in some dance classes pronto, so she can replicate some of Gwen’s moves!

I just don’t know how I feel about the pacing of this thing. Surely it’ll feel better upon a second viewing, and even better when the next one comes out. And, the animation and the best story/character moments made it an impressive full meal anyways. But, the way it was structured didn’t really leave me satisfied narratively, which is a pretty dramatic change from the efficiency of the last film.

Doesn’t help that the whole “canon event” fate thing feels weird so far. I conceptually love the idea of “canon” being an antagonistic force, but with where this "part one" left that conflict, I truly cannot say yet if the execution paid off.

I do like that the whole opening bit was basically "what if Spider-Gwen comics were ten times better." Just incredibly effective, emotional, visually stunning work there. Almost feels like some of that whole Gwen thread could've been the core of a great Spider-Women film, like was being developed at one point. (Also, liked that the museum sequence had the Koons art, with Gwen commenting on it being commentary on art while also being art; like, sure, why not get meta about getting meta right at the jump in this thing.)

After sleeping on it, I realized I hated this.

They left out a core component of Spider-Man.

Where was Jared Leto’s Morbius? How is he not a canon event? They really dropped the ball.

me too lol. I got back from france 2 days ago and still hella jet lagged. even on a double espresso I nodded off twice for like 5 seconds during the last hour. that's why I gotta see it again

especially now that i know that the movie really only has a full arc for gwen and a "next time on spider-verse" for everyone else

Lord & Miller are the kings of doing meta hollywood storytelling. I'm all in on all 3 matrix sequels so the chaotic nature of this was catnip for me

I feel like there's one exception.

Donald Glover as Prowler was a joy to see, and his "booooooo" got a guffaw out of me.

Yes, that was the least intolerable one

If that had been it, this movie would be an 11/10

I mean, as someone who rightfully knows that the Venom movie franchise rules, I liked seeing Mrs Chen. Pretty wild, fun idea. The cobbled together execution just didn’t work like it could’ve.

You’ll be pleased to know she has been begging us for months to put her in dance classes after now having done gymnastics for the last six months. She’s primed and ready lol. She said she wanted cool web shooters so I bought her these from Amazon as well:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09ZNZK6JS/?tag=absolutepunk-20

and she loves those things. Then she asked if they could let her swing through the trees and we had to be like “no, honey, unfortunately that’s not possible with these,” and then she asked how she could climb walls and we had to tell her, “well, you can’t really do that because that’s this thing called science fict - it’s magic, kiddo. It’s basically magic.” She then begged “but I want to have super powers like Gwen!” and we had to be like “well you’re a superhero like Gwen in your own way. It’s just…climbing walls with spider powers isn’t really possible because magic and magic isn’t really…you know…real?”

Her reaction was a horrified “WHAT?!?

Think we broke her. I know, kid, I know. I really do.

Question for those who’ve seen it already. My son is most definitely an anime kid already (turns eight this year and his starting point was Pokemon, then Digimon, Yokai Watch, Yugi-oh, Sailor Moon, Glitter Force, Dragon Ball, etc.) so his absolute favorite character from the first film was Peni Parker. So, does she have a cameo in this at all?

Yes. Super brief, but yes. And appears will have a role in the next one.

  23. One thing that confused me was that I thought Miles’ “canon event” had already taken place in the first film with Uncle Aaron dying - was that not a canon event? Or are multiple canon events possible?
