most spider-man comics since the 70s began suck. it's the unspoken truth. ditko run still hasn't been topped.

the exceptions are kraven's last hunt and zdarsky's life story graphic novel. everything else? mid (Ultimate Bendis, straczynski) to awful (MacFarlane, Slott, etc)

Not McFarlane alongside Slott, lol. ASM300 & “Torment” are such gnarly, cool comics schlock that don’t deserve to be in the same breath as the sporadically-great-but-largely-bleh Slott. (Though, the peak of The Todd’s work will always be Spawn #1.) Too bad my boy Mark Bagley is stuck wasting his time on more Slott slop, starting with a Spider-Verse; when will people realize these movies are the only time Spider-Verse will ever be good?

Anyways, the current Amazing Spider-Man is the best that title has been since JRJR left the JMS run. And, with the way tasteless dorks have whined about modern Romita art (and weirdly Dragotta’s as well???) and had cartoonish reactions to Paul… I truly think this will be the last time ASM is ever worth reading. What a Herculean effort on Zeb’s part to squeeze quality out of a poisoned well. Too bad someone had the bad idea of killing Kamala Khan (for probably just a few months), which will probably be what people talk about most in the run years from now.

Anyways. If you want more correct opinions on Spider-Man comics, let me know!

I dunno how I feel about this being over two hours long and so clearly only half of a story.

However, the animation and the playing around with the Spider-Man mythos/canon was really ramped up this time around. Even if a lot of the story is left off at an unsatisfying place, on a purely visual craft level, what a satisfying feast. And, everything with Gwen… wow. Genuinely got to me. She’s the MVP of this chapter.

Just out of seeing and okay, fine, I’ll love everything about this.

Beautiful film but didn’t connect with the story at all here and it definitely felt like a part one. Took forever to get going too. Hopefully part two ends strong.

Absolutely loved this. Can’t get over how well Gwen’s world was pulled straight from her comics and inject all the discussion of Canon Events into my veins.

    This was very good.

Don’t understand not being able to relate to Miles and Gwen’s stories.

This looked incredible. The Gwen/dad scene where they reconcile is a standout with the colors shifting as it went on to me. It really caught my eye.

I’m tired, I’m sure I’ll post more thoughts tomorrow and through the weekend. Great film. The next one is probably going to be like Harry Potter 7.2 where after an opening sequence, it’s basically all third act the rest of the movie. They set up a lot here.

It was feeling like a 10/10 masterpiece but the last 20 minutes or so really lost me. It felt like an awkwardly slow paced way to get to the cliffhanger and the twists weren’t landing. Still amazing and deserves another Oscar.

I think I may be one of the few who has no problem with the cliffhanger.

Having said that, the way this ending is handled will probably be much nicer once seen through the eyes of the entire trilogy.

Yeah my only issues with the film are that it is a part one and you feel it. I have confidence this team will stick the landing and this one will work better.

However, this movie is fucking incredible. The visuals are the most melting stuff ever put in a big budget American animated feature film.

And the script itself is very smart in spite of some of the messiness. A key here is that Lord & Miller saw an opportunity to directly address in a meta way how every Spider-Man (or superhero story) is essentially the same. There’s a point to it all unlike something like NWH which is happy just do memes and fan service and not engage with it’s multiverse premise in any meaningful way

  16. I have mixed feelings… It doesn’t touch the first which was perfect.

I feel this was too long yet felt like it never really got going. It also had too many introductions, both to the movie itself and to the characters.

Pacing and story were unfocused and trying to juggle with too much. A lot of the charm of the original is lost to that.

That said - Miles continues to be amazing. I love him as a character and his world. This shined for me in those smaller-scale moments with him like the initial encounter with The Spot at the bodega.

This was great in spite of all of this, or course. But it didn’t come close to how the original made me feel. It may be that I just have multiverse fatigue too.

It's A Secret To Everyone Prestigious

    i fucking loved this goddamn.

the animation, the artstyles between spiders/worlds was immaculate, i can see why they needed to push it back.

Spider-Punk was a highlight, Oscar Isaac was great as Spider-Man 2099

Just got out of this, wonderful cinematic experience but I don't quite buy some of the fever pitch praise that this is on the same ground as the verse one... A pretty significant step-down for me, but a significant step-down from a perfect film isn't all that bad... And they did the job of getting me excited for part 2 with ease.

I think both movies are perfect personally. If they can stick the landing, I think this could go down as one of the greatest trilogies of all time. This year wait is going to be the end of me

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

think a lot of my issues with this are resolved if they roll back a little bit on the endless referencing (especially the Venom moment which is just insanely bad lmao) and use that time to give us a bit more development on Miguel and Jessica. for such important characters they come across so one-dimensional in this

Thinking about this movie more and there’s so many films that claim to be “The Empire Strikes Back of (blank)”, but this is one of the few that actually feels like it. Also connected to that idea is as a standalone, I’m realizing this is a Gwen movie more than Miles. Her story/arc is satisfyingly completed in this one and Miles is set up to be ended in 3. To complete the Empire metaphor, she’s Luke/Leia and Miles is Han.

This is of a piece with 22 Jump Street in many ways. Fuck it, this is a 5 star movie. There's enough emotional resolutions to threads that were setup in it's opening minutes that i'm ok with it being a part one - especially when the part one we got is so unlike anything i've ever seen before
