The odd thing is it’s not even just me, I guess just participating in local music so much I end up with a lot of friends who like to encourage their talented friends to bring instruments places.

There are times at, say, a house party, when a couple musicians go off with a blunt and play together on the porch while everyone else is in the house or the main area socializing, and sometimes other people at the party will notice and will legit come out there with their beer or whatever to watch.

and occasionally the group of people as a whole will have times where they request to hear songs written by musicians who are there. I’ve at times gone to social events and parties with exclusively musicians and music scene people, and it is a focal point of the party where we pass around guitars and play various songs we know.

And a lot of times that results in people having conversations at the same time and not really paying attention to the music, treating it more like background, which is totally normal.

I’m feeling very twilight zone-y about how much everyone in this thread HATES it. For me it’s legit normal and common to be like “oh shit James should come to the cookout too, he’s a mandolin player tell him to bring his mandolin”, and us as a group kinda going with the flow about when is and isn’t a good time to break out instruments.

 

I just watched the Jack Osborne Bigfoot and ufo shows and it was not as eventful as one would have hoped

I can think of like 6-7 different circles of friends I’ve had in my life that have had that dynamic and have celebrated the talents of people in that group at social events, whether that’s visual art or being a musician or being a really good beer pong player or bringing good ass food to the party etc

 

All of those things are different than just busting out a guitar

 

Although randomly busting out beer pong would be obnoxious too but that's not a situation

 

I have a friend in town who invited me to a party because she saw me at an open mic and I’ve been to art sessions she’ll host at her place where everyone will just paint with watercolors

she’s also thrown a karaoke party at her house

Etc that kinda shit is the stuff I vibe with

 

chicago is cheap until you want to buy a house, no one is willingly living in downers grove bc it’s so cool lol

 

But if it’s legit socially encouraged at all of our hangouts…

I couldn’t go to any of Gena’s parties *without* her friends asking me to play something lol. And she had a couple other musician friends who were encouraged the same way
