Prefer their later material obviously but as a debut it’s great

I’ll say it always, this thread is for everybody. Just be cool and respectful.

enjoyed that one, need to revisit. i’m not into the super modern prog metal but i think since i like prog rock so much, some of the mastodon and opeth type stuff that leans into that works for me.

I don’t think I’ve spent much time with Opeth’s prog stuff, I should peep into that this summer.

fun hyli by the way tomorrow. we’re doing playlists for two bands, one an OG post-hardcore band and one that’s been discussed several times the last few pages.

So I'll be the resident modern prog metal guy. Put together a quick playlist of my favorites from the genre, or how I’m defining it. Maybe y’all will find something you like (feels like chorus should love Caligula’s Horse) and if you see something not here you think is similar to this feel free to recommend (except Haken or Leprous… they haven’t clicked with me yet).

Prog is cool (and prog metal >>>>>>>>>>>> prog rock) but, like most metal subgenres, something I prefer as part of a combination of sounds/styles.

So I'm in Seattle for a few days and it turns out the Northwest Terror Fest is happening this weekend. Honestly not super into the lineup but there is a Predatory Light show tomorrow before the festivities

I really liked The Contortionist’s first album a lot back when it came out, but never revisited anything that came after. I remember a band that had a similar sound to them but never got signed called Astronomer, and I dug their take on that style even more. Sadly never found a single mp3 of theirs after MySpace called it.

Damn I don’t think I can even finish this Veil of Maya album. I find it genuinely upsetting lol.

I really like the new Haken record, despite the awful album cover lol.

Periphery is a guilty favorite if they count as prog metal. Animals as Leaders rules.

Dream Theater's 90s run is pretty stellar too

I like Haken's music a lot, but Ross ruins it for me. I know that's a cliche take, but I've tried time and time again, and just can't do it.

Man $30 for the Predatory Light show. There are only two other bands opening. Is this how expensive shows are now? Been out of the live show scene for awhile

Generally yes. Shits gotten expensive. Especially when you have a four band bill with two out of town bands at a venue that uses AXS for ticketing like the show you're mentioning.

Edit: I'm just happy the next show I've got on the horizon is $13 before fees with Inter Arma, Jarhead Fertilizer, and Suppression.
