I have never left an apartment in bad shape and still never got a deposit back. Landlords always come up with some bullshit with the house they can blame on you and essentially dare you to take them to court, knowing petty renters don’t have that kinda money or time off work

@CarpetElf and his wife saw how clean I kept the last house… and the dude tried to say because there’s clearly an oil leak that somehow I must have not filled the oil tank and caused it to be damaged. Bro, I just had to pay $750 to fill it because it was empty even though the gauge said it was half full, how the fuck is it my fault it’s already empty again

I showed him the receipts where I filled the tank mid February and stopped using the heat in March. It didn’t matter.

 

I had a landlord once accuse me and my roommates of jumping on top of the fridge from the stairs, of doing hard drugs, of breaking a window etc and we did nothing of the sort. He also deducted money for us lighting fireworks in our huge front yard (we lived in the countryside) even though we literally picked up all the trash the next day, and for “driving on the grass” (there was no driveway, literally just a grass trail off a dirt road?) and then when we called bullshit him and his wife showed up at the house and tried to call the cops on us.

We literally did nothing to that house, only illegal thing we did is smoke weed outside and there’s no way he would’ve known that.

 

I’ve left a place hotel spotless after 12 hours of cleaning, even washed the carpets with a steamvac and got the bathtub white with bleach

guy still claimed I left the house disgusting and would not provide pictures or evidence of any mess when repeatedly requested

another apartment had rat problems and blamed me for something that was likely an issue before I got there (I saw the apartment before they cleaned it when I moved in, it was ATROCIOUS)

I could go on and on. Shit my mom is the cleanest person ever, her house never has any clutter, never has any residue on the countertops or the bathroom sink etc and she had a landlord pull that shit on her before she moved back home to New Orleans.

That’s who I learned how to clean houses from, and we were a navy family that moved many times so I got a lot of experience with that. Growing up, I’ve yet to see one benefit or one reason why you should clean SHIT when you move out

 

My dog tore our apartment UP and we somehow got the deposit back. Still don't know how we got it back. Because that place was definitely not worth getting it back lol

 

I think I’ve always gotten my deposit back and sometimes didn’t clean the apartment very well.

 

It’s depended on the landlord for me. Randall is right they can just hold it and it make you get a lawyer if they want. I’ve always left my apartments in good shape but I’ve paid some $500 “cleaning fees” or whatever because I didn’t want to go through the trouble. Of course that changed for me when I became a lawyer but it still happens to people all the time.

 

I should also be clear that I pretty much only rent from private owners and never from large companies because A) they’ve been more accepting of me not having perfect credit or more than 3x the rent B) much easier to find deals below market rate.

And that strategy works really well for me, there’s only been one time in my adult life that I wasn’t thrilled with where I moved and it was part of the reason I left Maryland to begin with haha. I’m pretty tenacious about finding awesome situations for my income level,

but I suppose that’s the hidden cost, private landlords can be sketchy af and keep your deposit for any reason, snoop around the house/property unannounced, etc

I’m sure several other teams have done this, but I just cannot imagine urging a player to get a surgery they have expressed that they don’t want to get, then cutting them after they get it

I don’t even know what the medical expenses and coverages look like for players if they’re on or off the team, but it’s not a good look for the Jets
