When they make songs like this and get away from the annoying scream/sing sections, the band really shines. Best song on the album.

i cant get into the dudes vocals whatsoever, it was even worse live when i saw them in 2020. im one of those people that doesn't get the hype. the vocals are so derpy and annoying sounding, is it the music everyone likes or a combo of both?!? hha yah no bueno

Moving Chris from drums to guitar/co-lead vocals was the best decision this band ever made. He’s a much better singer.

  5. I feel the exact same way. They are not a great live act imo (seen 'em twice) and the pretty good songwriting is just really hurt by the vocal performance on record for me. I can see that being the draw for some people tho. I like this record and the last one but there is a serious ceiling on how much I can ever enjoy this band.

Love the duel vocals. Love the screaming. The band knows what they are and continue to build upon it with each release.

I echo the vocal sentiment. Perhaps the most annoying voice I can think of in music right now. And I’m not trying to be mean! I just can’t listen to a full song because of it. But they seem like they’ve gained a lot of momentum in the last year and I’m happy for em. I hope it continues.

  8. Love the vocals. Nice throwback to when every singer didn’t sound like they were computer corrected to perfection.

i saw them live first and it was so bad i walked away. then i tried out their recordings and its just so derpy and strainey for me. it reminds me of all the yelly punk bands from the 2010s but unlistenable.

I like his cleans a lot. Of course Chris is great as well. I just don’t like when he does the random screams.

Finally gave this a go on the way home from work. I loved it! I may have to start my Hot Mulligan vinyl collection soon!

I didn’t really like (nor dislike!) this band until I saw them live.

And I am very much scratching my head at using “derpy” (twice) to describe the vocals..lol

Yeah they killed in on the TWY tour and made me an instant fan. Also the vocals are great. This isn’t some super poppy, clean, over produced pop punk. I don’t know what you’re really complaining about. His screams are great too.

Knocked Loose is my favorite band, so I love screaming. It just doesn’t gel well here, in my opinion. For example, the chorus of “And I Smoke” is ruined by the sing/scream thing Tades does. It has the making for an insanely catchy chorus if it wasn’t shouted.

Very much agreed with this take. Been into this band since I first heard "Dary" on a sampler album. They're aging like a fine wine.
Exactly! Which is part of why I think they're great live.
I feel the same way. Seen them three times. Fantastic every time.
Thank you, voice of reason! I was also confused by "derpy." Eccentric, sure.

  18. Look, all I can say is that both times I saw them the vocals were all over the place (in terms of pitch), and the band's sound was really hard to parse (i.e., the instruments weren't cutting through the mix, could barely hear the guitars). Definitely some blame on the live mixing engineer, but the fact that it happened twice, at different venues, and every other band on both bills sounded great just gave me the impression that the band didn't really know how to translate their songs live. Not trying to be overly negative, but I was not impressed. Their energy onstage was decent but again, the other bands on the bill really outshone them there too.

maybe the kids don't care these days about how bands sound live? they were atrocious when i saw them. Lurk, WSTR, & Grayscale blew them away on that tour. but since that that tour they've gained momentum so good for them!

I'm 37 and have been going to shows for over 20 years. Hot Mulligan has been great every time I've seen them live including on that tour with Lurk, WSTR, and Grayscale (in Houston that time).
