I thought this was an interesting read.

I never read that scene as Elsa being certain that she picked the wrong grail - it always struck me as she had a hunch or a theory about what the grail actually looked like and was aware that there were two schools of thought on it - gilded and bejeweled or wooden and plain-looking - but she was not sure herself and she wanted to test her theory out, but not on herself obviously, and Walter Donovan provided her with a great subject. Really using the situation to her utmost advantage.

To be honest though, I don't think I've ever tried to focus on what Elsa was doing in the background of the shot before now. I've always been focused on Donovan in the foreground and on Indy, because I think Harrison Ford is absolutely amazing in the scene, and he's mostly just standing there. I just tried watching the scene again on YouTube on my phone and it's just too small for me to make out. She definitely gives Indy a meaningful look during the scene, and then she does look over at him again when she's walking forward toward Donovan's back as he's holding the grail, but I can't tell if she subtly shakes her head or if she's just navigating the stone floor with steps and rocks and stuff.

So watching the YouTube clip of the Grail Room scene in my car this morning before work has now lead to me watching the entire movie of The Last Crusade while having a few martinis tonight, and I'll be damned if this isn't my favorite Indy movie.

I don't know how anyone can say it's not up there with Raiders when right after Elsa falls to her death after foolishly reaching for The Grail despite Indy's pleas, Indy falls into the crevasse and his dad grabs his hand, and then he's the one reaching for The Grail the same way and about to die the same way Elsa just did, and his emotionally distant father - who spent his entire adult life pursuing The Grail, to the detriment of all else, especially his family and relationship with his son - looks down and says "Indiana." (not Junior!) "Indiana. Let it go."

    Tears.

Bummer that the critics aren’t enjoying this, but this isn’t dampening my excitement for it at all. Give it to me now.

TFA is my favorite sequel Star Wars so I like the sound of that. If this movie being safe means it’s not a repeat of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull then THANK YOU.

Big bummer that this is playing it way too safe.

Did people expect them to close out the franchise with Harrison Ford in a super out there way? Would be truly weird to make a huge shift for his final appearance as Indy. This should feel safe as it should feel like a closing of the book for this character.

I really love this line the telegraph review. The best part is it's a British newspaper so I don't know whether it's sincere or not

    I do not exist.

Not sure if you wanted any information but for anyone who does… The Telegraph are a right wing, conservative leaning newspaper so my guess would be they’re trying to connect to their audience who stereotypically will hate all things ‘woke’, so using a bit of sarcasm / satire relating to current debates and reflections about museum content / British empire etc.

  21. Has the emotional standing ovation always been a thing at Cannes or did I just start noticing with Brendan Fraser last year?
