    I’d say ‘enjoy’ but… haha

I strained my gastroc playing pickleball (this is probably a sign I’m old) two weeks after my last half so I haven’t run in almost a month now and I’m starting to lose my mind. Been doing PT (some weakness and tightness in my hips and ankles caused the muscle problem) and should be cleared on Wednesday to start short runs again. It’s crazy how one small, very painful injury can wreck the best shape you’ve ever been in.

Phew. That was hard. Getting psyched to race, though. Feel like my fitness is way more dialed in than it was for my first marathon a year ago.

been doing 6-8 miles 6 days a week for the last month and this nagging high quad strain i had over the winter has flared up again. time to rehab.

while the pace is of course impressive, most impressive to me is that this appears to be an out and back over that distance. I absolutely hate out and backs or repeating loops so double kudos (unless it just looks like an out and back from this visual)

I don’t mind either of these but tap out at 3 laps. I have a 7km (4.5 mile) loop right near me which I can extend to 12km (7.5 mile) so yesterday was 2 laps of the long version and 1 of the standard. The thought of that probably makes you ill haha

haha, it certainly does a bit! I did a marathon in Iowa last year that was two 13 mile loops and I didn’t really know that until a few days before as I finally looked closer at the map and realized it wasn’t 26 “different” miles through the city. Was very happy I didn’t know that sooner lol.

Kind of the same scenario with a marathon in Illinois in May of last year - major sections were out and backs - so in training I did coordinate a few of my long runs to be 5-6 miles loops I would do 3 or 4 times to try and mentally prepare for that, which certainly helped, but I definitely now put a greater emphasis on course layouts when decided what races to do.

oh I’m 100000% with you there. Races should not be laps under any circumstance!

Yeah, it's an out and back, and it's actually the course for my hometown marathon, so part of the purpose of this run was getting out there to reacquaint myself with where all the mile markers are and the general feel of the course. I don't mind out and backs so much, though; I do them all the time, and this one is helped by the near-constant view of the water.

I'm headed out for maybe 5-6 with some farklets in the middle......in the heat of the day, full sun and humidity to acclimate a little more before my big race next weekend.

When I was dealing with nagging injuries towards the end of 2022 it really made me realize how fascinating and crazy the human body is. Like, with nothing BUT this body (and a good pair of shoes, let’s be honest) you could literally go almost anywhere on land. I’d think to times when I would get up, pack a bag and small cooler, park somewhere and fucking go run 13-20 miles all over a city or trail or whatever and then just…. Go home and live a normal day the rest of the day lol.

there are people that whine about having to go to the other end of a department store to get something and yeah that’s certainly been me at times too and is a different scenario and lots of other things but it’s just so fucking cool to me that I can look at runs I’ve done and been like “wow, I literally just ran all around that small town / small city / miles and miles of trails or roads” or whatever.

Wild to me when people don't incorporate a sense of exploration with their running ability. I mean I have my routine routes I do out of convenience every single week, but I wouldn't be happy without exploring or doing something quirky or weird with this ability to run long distance.

Some people go too hard on their runs and think that's just how running feels. I'm sure that takes the joy out of it and more of a "I have to get this done today" type mindset.

100% no way for me haha. I'll do it when I have no other option for sure, but otherwise its any other time than early morning. I'll work 11-7 sometimes, and I might get it in before work, but sometimes I'll just wait til after 7 to hit the park.

I always run the same routes because I know where bathrooms are and who is nearby to pick me up if someone hits me or I pull a muscle or something.

The city I live in I have lived in for around 26ish years of the 35 I’ve been alive and it’s humorous to me that I’ve seen so many of the streets by running them than driving in/past them. So many neighborhoods and things I had no idea existed.

I’m also a big architecture fan so it’s been a lot of fun seeing some unique house/business designs I would likely never have seen because I had never driven only them (and also, kind of not paying attention to houses and whatnot while driving, of course)

where would i be if i was my brain Prestigious

I've got the Rock n Roll half on 6/4. My training has not been great. I'm getting out there but I haven't had a run longer than 8 miles at all. I also screwed myself over with getting behind on school so I can't devote a ton of time to ramping up my endurance.

  22. I’m not a particularly great runner (I can knock out 5+ miles at a ~8:30 pace but that’s it) but it is the only form of exercise I enjoy and the only thing I can make myself do regularly. Welp today I picked up a grade 3 ankle sprain playing basketball so I’m off my feet for maybe as long as 6-8 wks…what has anyone in here done for cardio exercise with a similar injury? Would love any suggestions because I’m super bummed at the moment. Thanks!

whenever i get an injury that prevents me from running i aways default to road biking or swimming. i've been dealing with a chronic high quad strain that has kept me pretty limited over the past year. been going to a lot of spin classes at my local recreation center to get my cardio.

would have shit my pants. Looks gorgeous there!

Did the Colfax Marathon Relay here in Denver today. I was the last leg of the relay and did 6.1 miles at around 10:30 pace which was slower than I wanted, but the air quality has been bad here the last few days with the wildfire smoke making its way down and also the sun was strong today which zapped me. Was hoping for closer to 9:30 but I'll take it.
