Kitchen scene with Danny gettin’ it just started and my wife goes, “Okay this is NOT my kind of scary movie,” and ran upstairs to the bedroom.

*cue the curb your enthusiasm intro music and slow zoom in to my face*

  6. Starting Phase Two of my friends' horror movie club tomorrow! I've described it to them as a little more serious than the horror comedies in Phase One and a little less intense than the heavy hitters in Phase Three (The Shining/Doctor Sleep). And apparently a lot of it is in foreign languages. Kicking things off with Let the Right One In, which I haven't revisited in a very long time, so I'm really excited.

(the final Phase Four is gonna be less scary than Phase Three, but weirder, just bonkers shit like Malignant and X/Pearl lolol; I'm keeping it a secret from them so they don't look up the synopses and spoil it)

Huesera hits Shudder today! Seems too coincidental for JBB not to show it tonight on Mother's Day weekend?

  8. That's what I was thinking, too. Hoping so, because the trailer is great.

Just realizing now you may have been thinking of Fatal Exam, not Final Exam. It's currently on Shudder TV and the 5 seconds I just saw looks better than all of what I saw in Final Exam.

  11. I watched EDR a couple days ago (for the second time) and I liked it about the same amount as I did the first time. A step down from the 2013 movie, but it’s enjoyable enough for sure.

Recency bias is most likely at play, but I find EDR to be pretty damn close to ED '13. As a whole, I thought the acting was stronger in Rise. The change in setting was also welcomed. My only complaint re: Rise is that there were a few moments where they could've added an exclamation point, but they settled for a period. Namely, the cheese grater scene and Danny's kitchen scene.

  13. Yeah I totally agree. Especially on my second watch, it all felt less crazy. And I thought the character Bridgett was pretty bad. She seemed pretty bored with everything going on rather than freaking the fuck out that their mom was possessed. Actually, all the actors were pretty tame with that whole situation. But yeah, 2013 takes the cake for me, but this one was good and I hope successful enough that they won't wait another 10 years before making another. The next one needs to go completely off the rails though.

Agree with this. The cheese grater scene could've been so much juicier. If you ran that idea through the ED'13 folks and filter, it would've been a much more intense "I can't look at the screen" moment

  15. EDR was exactly what I want/need out of an Evil Dead movie and nothing more. And that's okay! Perfect for what it was, but yes, I'd love something really, truly unhinged with the next entry

I feel my pick would have to be Halloween. If I choose anything else, I'd probably be lying to myself.

I love seeing Kathryn Newton in stuff after being Supernatural, put her in everything

I love it when any Marvel actress is in at least one horror film just to shake things up, tho off the top of my head I can only think of ScarJo in Under the Skin and Flo in Midsommar...

edit: Oh, isn't Mia Goth gonna be in Blade? hah, nice

edit2: Now I'm just looking at lists. Karen Gillan in Oculus! Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson in Annihilation! Lupita Nyong'o in Us!

  20. It's Dawn of the Dead '78 for me

I just watched the Kill Count for that and it reminded me why I loved it so much. Movie scared me SO much when I was a kid.

I might switch to Vacations of Terror 2 because I don’t really feel committed to like an actual movie at the moment but I’m ten minutes into Evil Dead Rise and it’s already REALLY fun and big shoutout to the guy at the door who gets defensive and says there aren’t any shitty Freddy movies. Dude knows what is up.
