is the post-empire republic canonically socialist or did they just fall right back into the same old eventually-fascist trap of hierarchical capitalism? no wonder the first order rocketed back to power in like 20 years

This season of Mandalorian started to get into what happened post-empire and how the First Order was able to rise. I haven't read enough of the books to know if they've expanded more on it yet or not so I'm not sure if it's known yet what type of government the New Republic was

 

Went to the ROTJ showing in theaters last night - seeing the CGI max Rebo band in a theater was such a bizarre experience

 

I’m assuming it’s the special edition right? I remember seeing the musical number in the theater

 

Yup, was even more jarring in that environment

 

So the novel Bloodlines goes into the politics of the New Republic 6 years pre Force Awakens. The main thrust of that novel is Mon Mothma is retiring and the New Republic Senate is trying to determine their path forward without her leadership. The two competing ideas are should the central government be stronger and provide galactic services, with the focus being military and economic support, versus a loose organization of systems under a Republic with no real power. Leia is on the side of the stronger Republic that can help smaller systems while the Senators who know about/secretly support the First Order want a weaker central government to limit the capabilities of those trying to oppose them. Overall the second group win out due to fear of a stronger government creating a new Empire. This inspires Leia to form the Resistance independent of the New Republic as she knows there’s something coming and the galaxy needs a response.

 

Jedi: Survivor has been fun so far. While the book wasn’t my favorite, I’m glad I read Battle Scars before playing cause it definitely set the table for where the crew is at the start of this game.
