its worth it. it proves context to otherwise ridiculous lines like "I need Mayo!" (Mayo is a generals name) and the really weird plot twist of having the "Writing Writer" be both a character writing the story and a character INSIDE the story hes writing. Plus all the mythology surrounding "Burning Star IV" and The Crowing and all this other shit you know what im probably not helping just go read a synopsis and hmu

i have no idea what the fuck the story is to In The Aeroplane Over The Sea other than the Anne Frank inspiration, but god damn that album is beautifully disturbing.

What? Nah haha. The albums are polar opposite in meaning (IARB is meant to unapologetically defend the blunt, rebellious, and raw music approach and parody the pretentiousness of hierarchy in music... The Ugly Organ meanwhile turns its lens of criticism back on its own music scene and how much it relies on melodrama for marketing)

And aside from that I don't really think the musical undertones are that similar. Cursive is like a dark yet emotionally disarming horror punk meets The Cure, IARB took on a more driving and hook-laden Bad Religion meets Head Automatica.

musically and lyrically you cant deny the similarities, Cursive just did it much, much better. Max Bemis is a hack.

the only thing Max didnt completely rip off from Cursive (and mind you, Max ripped off a lot of scene contemporaries) was Grettas cello. that wouldve been a bit too on the nose

this is all coming from someone that likes IARB/WARB btw

I would also argue Max ripped off Gatsbys American Dream during the Ribbons & Sugar era.

iarb is cool. im glad no one named it as a good concept album though lol. and im double glad no one named in defense.

And I love both albums, like both are on my top 5 to come out of pop punk in the 2000s

I mean no its not a good concept record lol but it does have some quotable lines and excellent punk style musicianship throughout

oddly enough im a p staunch defender of Defense aside from the gross/racist songs but yeah its not a very good concept album nor is IARB.

fucking wild to me that IARB was almost a god damn musical

Not a narrative concept album, but most of the album is heavily influenced lyrically by Ray Kurzweill's book The Age of Spiritual Machines, with a few excerpts of the author reading segments of his book sprinkled throughout the album.

Some of the later tracks on the album have a fairly eerie vibe to them

i could whittle in defense down to a solid 9-10 track album

the interplay between the drums and the guitars on iarb has always been endlessly unique for the genre. still is to this day.

Seriously though Tim.Kasher didn't write anything that sounded like "Woe" until MAYBE that Good Life record and even then ehhhh. The music takes an entirely different tone on to me.

i mean, im not saying Max and Tim wrong songs note for note but cmon you cant deny that Max took a lot of guitar riffs and song structure and lyrical themes from Kasher during the Domestica/TUO era

And that's why pegging it as "ripping off" Cursive seems off to me. I'm still struggling to find a comparison for IARB that really makes much sense. Though I always hear Bad Religion in there somewhere, that's just the raw songwriting though not the embellishments/detail (which actually, the instrumentals sound more like indie rock but with the gain turned up to 7 and not kept down at 3 or 4)
