I've read that we get dinged by the FIFA rankings for playing these low ranking teams in friendlies that we seem to do a lot. Do you know if that is correct? Wales stopped doing this and it is partly the reason for their rise in the rankings.....that and they have played really well.

We do. We lose ranking points by playing pretty much all CONCACAF teams (but Mexico/Costa Rica) if it's not in a tournament. We'd do better to lose to premier European teams in friendlies, and even better to not play them at all.

you wouldn't lose any points, you just get fewer than if you were playing like Germany lets say.

edit: what? you don't lose points unless you lose a match.

We need to start working the system a little bit then. I know you need to play some of these friendlies to get new players familiar with the CONCACAF way of life but game the rankings then. I know we all think the rankings are bullshit but when they have ramifications then we need to play the game.

Winning the 2017 Gold Cup is the most important thing, rankings-wise. But I don't foresee us ever getting into the top 8 before Russia to be seeded.

wait my maths was bad yeah. winning both the NZ and Cuba games loses you 10 points. us winning both of our qualifiers this month nets us an amazing 2 points. so yeah could be worse I guess.

That honestly makes no sense in my brain but hell pretty much anything related to the governing body that is FIFA makes non sense to me.

it actually does make sense in a way. technically you gain 350 points from both games, but games from I think 12 months ago are made less important you would have gained more points before last october. therefore you lose 10 overall.

and teams from different confederations are rated with certain points (uefa/conmebol are higher than the rest iirc) that get used as coefficients too

i made an almighty mess of that post. it's late and I feel sick ok.

conmebol is 1.0. uefa is 0.99 and the rest are 0.85.

the equation is Points = result * competition (friendly:1.0, qualifier: 2.0, confed cup: 3.0, world cup: 4.0) * ranking of opponent * confed of opponent

it takes the average of all your points over the last 12 months added to the average of the previous 3 years, with each year going back being of less importance.

if you go onto the fifa website you can calculate the points you get from your recent matches.

  12. Toby's goal today was incredible. A defender should not be able to finish like that.

Janssen had a beautiful goal as well. And 2 assists.Hoping he carries this form over to Tottenham.

Nice to see the plucky minnows of St George's England somehow manage to slay the goliath that is the mighty Malta.

    What a shit show.

I haven't enjoyed FIFA since 98. Has the gameplay changed at all, or do all teams still play like Barcelona and never miss a pass?

  22. Nick

    @fangclubb Prestigious

Yep, everyone still plays like Barca.
