Lol I just watched his 40th bday episode last night and didn't realize I was basically livestreaming Frank's set

 

Exactly what I had in mind. I can hear Kendall in my head saying "Uh uh, fuck it.. we're ditching the ice rink and we're going to throw the kid on stage".

like who else besides Kendall would bring a kid on stage to represent his "inner child".

 

One of the most tiring aspects of Twitter is people telling other people that they’re dumb for being excited about something.

 

Framing it as putting one over on rich people is extremely dumb as well, I'm sure there are plenty of folks with average means that made a trip of it to see an artist they love that have every right to be upset.

Weird defense of an artist who was seemingly apathetic to the whole thing.

 

This is way more insufferable than anything Frank Ocean did or didn't do last night

 

I feel bad for the fans I don't feel bad for Golden Voice or Coachella

 

I would never go to a music festival but this is maybe the dumbest fucking thing I’ve seen on twitter in a good while.

I see all those sides of it too. I'm even sympathetic to some them - especially the interpretation that this is a prank on rich people.

But it's not enough to get over the flippant nature of the disrespect he leveled onto anyone that put work into setting up for his performance. Think of the crew that had the tear stuff down last minute. Or the energy/resources that went into making and then melting an ice rink in the middle of the f*cking desert. Or the make-up artist that was in charge of the face paint or whatever. What a jerk.

 

If he can't be a musician anymore after losing his brother that's understandable but also why book a high profile gig

 

I feel like the prank on rich people angle is in bad faith tbh. People without assloads of money save up for and spend it on nice things too, and that comprises a huge part of the audience of Coachella, insanely sold out Taylor and Bruce Springsteen concerts, and so on. Obviously in this case you're getting a whole festival worth of entertainment for the ticket price, not just a Frank Ocean concert, but still.

 

Didn’t he commit to play before losing his brother though? My assumption was that he couldn’t back out without paying them a lump sum of money

 

Between this and the disastrous Bonnaroo 2014 set, I’d say he’s just not meant to be a live performer…and that’s fine.

Just stop booking gigs and collecting checks please.

The snark comes across as very “You hate capitalism and yet you participate? I am very smart.” Like, no one feels bad for Coachella and their ghoulish bookers.

It’s the people that held out hope that maybe he could put on a stunning show since he never tours and rarely performs live. Like this thread has suggested, he comes across like a rich asshole that loves pranking his fans because he’s so insulated from criticism and private that nothing negative will ever stick, no matter what kind of shit he pulls. It truly sucks.

 

Production woes aside, I think re-interpreting his own songs is a cool idea. It doesn't excuse the messiness but, ya, there's a shadow of an interesting idea there.

Also, I feel like he will actually deliver next weekend.
