  1. The doc was great, but I definitely agree with this. The outdoor show I saw was so special and it would have been a great way to end the film.

yeah this was amazing. wow. really thought this was gonna be much more of a “making of” studio piece - they went deep on stuff. sheesh.

love the doc, sam is the best at making that type of pic

  7. New song out and it’s the best of the three yet. Hit me really hard, kind of like “Dreamsicle” and “Only Children” did last album cycle when he put those out

New song is fantastic. 3 for 3 for me so far. Can't wait to hear the whole album.

Yep- that's another stunner alright. Flat out irresponsible of him to be that good of a singer/writer/guitarist.

Middle of the Morning is still the one for me, but I really like Cast Iron Skillet.

Another one. Album release is way too far away.

Lol way back when the last Brian Fallon album came out I posted my one small criticism of the otherwise great song Vincent: “A couple lines fall a little flat for me (I can’t help but think of how a writer like Jason Isbell would replace “I stabbed him once and I stabbed him again” with a much more subtle, evocative lyric)”

Three years later Isbell quite nearly proves my point literally with “Was it twenty-seven times, or was it twenty-nine?/I heard the blade broke off inside the man and he took a while to die.”

He’s so good at telling just the right amount of story and picking just the right details to stop you in your tracks.

  15. I am a proud parent of a human child but I think I’m gonna make bumper stickers that say “If That Kid Bites My Dog I’ll Kill It” feel like they’d do well

Ever check out James McMurtry? He's got a great knack for that as well. I know he's toured with Isbell a little bit, but I feel like he remains terribly under appreciated. He's an incredible story teller and can make one (sometimes 12-string) guitar sound like two or three. Here's a vid of one of his songs, coincidentally also named after something someone might have around when cooking by a campfire.

choctaw bingo and canola fields are thee tracks

  18. A fun fact about me is that I saw James McMurtry do a full set right before DBT at a festival last summer and the whole time Patterson, Cooley, and Jay were standing at the side of the stage entranced. McMurtry is a titan and his last album might very well be his best

The algorithm gods must be watching because Isbell covering McMurtry just popped up in my feed.

Just saw that he's playing Twangfest at Off Broadway again this year. Gonna have to try to make it down for that!

I picked up on the cast iron skillet on the album cover right away, but it just clicked for me that the knife with the broken blade is another clever reference to the song

also pure speculation now but, considering he currently has tour dates through October 7th, it would seem to line up this year's Ryman run Oct 13th - 21st. would really love to get back down there for it especially if he'll be celebrating Southeastern during that run.

Love the McMurtry appreciation. That guy never gets enough recognition. The guy has like 4 albums that are close to perfect.
