    THRASH METAL THVRSDAY YOU HEATHENS

Let's start with a new album. How about some Canadian death/thrash? Album just came out last week. For a year with some solid thrash offerings (Necropanther, Judiciary etc) this one has quickly become one of my favorites. It's quick and aggressive and everything I want in a thrash album:

Next we have a new song from Exmortus, the California tech thrash veterans. If you like Revocation I think you'll dig this. Album doesn't come out until August unfortunately but here's a preview. Video is corny and perfect:

And lastly, in honor of the new Overkill album coming out tomorrow (which will be bad and I will feel bad listening to it if I even listen to it) I'm gonna post my favorite album by them in its entirety:

New Metallica is fine but none of these songs need to be over 4 minutes long, and that's being generous.

If they'd just stick to what they did with Lux Aeterna and not repeat every section of every song 6 times, they'd have a pretty solid record. When they found out CDs could hold 80min they felt they HAD to fill it.

I haven't heard it yet. In the theater now and wanted to save the closer.

Can't say I really like Lar's kickdrum sound, at all. The "thumpiness" to it just annoys me

This feels like a band completely out of any interesting ideas, that to compensate decide to drag on the songs for minutes longer than they should be. Not a fan of the overall production either. Instead of them being "songs", they instead just feel like them riffing an idea for several minutes, and then slapping a song title on it.

That’s what I’ve said about the last two albums, they pad out these songs when they should be under 4 minutes like you said and I can’t get into them largely because of that.

St. Anger too. I know people complain about Lars drums there, but the overlong songs are what really kill that record to me.

Happy Metallica (I guess), Overkill, Voidceremony (although @swboyd posted the full album link yesterday), Dodheimsgard, Holy Moses, Blazon Rite, Deathgrave, etc release day to all those that celebrate.

not listening to an elderly metallica try to pretend it's still the 80's for a 3rd album, but i respect any of you willing to sit through that.

No reason for a metal album to ever be that long

Cult Of Luna has some great albums. Not sure if any of their albums actually clock in at exactly 80 minutes, but I know some come close

Depends on the band and the genre tbh. I'd listen to an 80 minute long funeral doom or The Ruins of Beverast album because they typically focus more on atmosphere than a band like Metallica does. When it's just riff after riff after riff recycled back and forth, that's where you lose me. They still have potential greatness on these late era releases (Spit Out The Bone on the last album, haven't given this one a listen yet and don't plan to for a bit), but I feel like they need some creative guidance or something just to cut it down. Someone to say, "Give us a 4-song, less than 20-minute EP as a starter and then go from there ya nerds."

    Bandcamp Review:

"This release is like if you took the best bits of Death, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary and Deicide and got rid of all the bloat and superfluous nonsense and created crushing, catchy and frankly quite beautiful Death Metal.

A band to watch and one I will be sewing to my jacket as soon as I can."

    Color me intrigued.

Even Metallica (albeit 100 years ago) has songs/albums that warrant longer lengths. It just feels like they're reaching for something "epic" like another Puppets or One, but those songs have dynamics and go places, everything they've written on the last 4 records has been 1 decent riff, 1 subpar riff, a chorus, repeat 4x until the listener is completely bored with even the first decent riff, end song 10 minutes later.
